Layout Question: Thumping The Thumb Hole
« on: May 30, 2006, 11:30:47 AM »
Hi guys,

I overheard a conversation from someone I know. This particular bowler is a High Tracker, so obviously, one must be careful with choosing layouts.

We all know that there are "Flare Safe Zones," for possibility of clipping the finger holes.

But in this situation, we are talking about the thumb hole.

I do not know the exact layout of the ball, but I overheard this...

Bowler: "Man, my ball is thumping the thumb hole."

Ball Driller: "Oh, I meant for the ball to do that."

Ok, now that you have read that...please discuss your thoughts on the conversation that I just mentioned.

Thanks!

My initial reaction is that the layout was wrong (or the driller just blindly punched up the ball without checking the bowlers track, PAP, etc).  With that being said, I'm not sure I have ever seen a ball (with the exception of a 3/4 roller throwing a full roller layout) clip the thumb down the lane.  I've had balls flare over the fingers, but never the thumb (the ball would have to reverse flare as normally, the flare migrates away from the thumb)...  I could see the bowler with a very high track (close to full roller) clip the thumb hole on the first revolution or two, but not down the lane.  I would be inclined to think it would be fingers or possibly a weight hole?

As far a purposely drilling a ball to roll over the thumb (or fingers), it would act to kill the reaction (or at a minimum lessen to some extent).  If this was the case, it would be a better idea to just drill an appropriate ball...  as now you have to deal with lane oil in the holes...  so my assessment is either 1) its a joke or 2) its a bad attempt to cover up a mistake
