Okay,

I know different drill angles and all that but I've put a 5 1/4 pin to Pap, "Trick" drilling as designated in this drill sheet on my 4000 grit Mission X, and I love it!

This thing has length even on medium volume pattern and lots of recovery from a fairly straight midlane. As I thought if not for 6 pins I would have had a 7 last night(it will happen) with this setup!

Also in the league is a bowler with great movements(he has 3s and 8s to his name(I don't). He has a more standard 5 1/4 or 5 1/2 over his bridge on a very similarly prepared Mission X. He really doesn't have nearly the same shot. Like other balls I have prepared like his, his ball has very little recovery and doesn't seem to really start working until the track is drying up in the heads and midlane. Then he kills!

I believe mine is drilled about, about 50 X 5 1/4 X 30. His is about 40 X 5 1/2 X 45.

My Mass bias is 4 inches from the PAP, his is about 5.

I have a similar drilling on a rogue cell as his drilling and with some more surface than he, I get a ton of midlane and a pretty good recovery when dryer(I may be a little more on the side with a more rev dominant release) With a C system 3.5 with a slightly stronger pin I get lots of midlane and then moderate recovery!.

Using Storm's terminology I know my pin buffer is 1 1/2 his is closer to 4.

3 questions.
1. Why is this "Trick" Drilling so much better? With great push and yet great recovery? His just seems to have a lot of push but not much recovery.
2. How would this drilling work on what I believe a weaker cover ball, say a Rogue Cell or Taboo Black?
3. Is there a similar reaction and drilling I can put on a Orange Black Cyclone or any other slightly weaker skinned symmetric with a 3 1/2 pin out that could give me a similar recovery but easier push?
4. Should we really be looking at the angle our mass bias to pin line intercepts our first track line instead of all these drill angles? I know lots of bowlers with a Pap like mine (5 1/2 up 1/4 who have a dramatically) different first track line than I do.

Thoughts?

1.) Your layout has a pin buffer of 1 1/2". VAL angle of around 20*. If his pin buffer is around 4" then his VAL angle is probably somewhere around 70*. That would be the reason why his doesn't unload off the breakpoint. He's deciding to control the breakpoint rather than have something in his hand that has the potential of being over/under or break loose on inconsistent shots. I wouldn't say it's better, it just works really well for you.

2.) If you like the layout in one ball, my suggestion is to look at a ball that has close numbers and a weaker cover.

3.) You could try it in a much weaker ball like those. Be mindful with layout that store energy, the ball might become extremely over/under.

4.) Don't understand #4 but especially in Asyms, yes you should keep up with VAL and drill angles or Pin Buffer system because they matter in accordance to your PAP.

Can't answer your technical questions at all, but I use the Tommy Jones layout on the majority of my pieces now. I have it on a 3D-offset; two Sonic-X's; and a couple of solid Storm pieces. I love it.

Great length and recovery, just like you said!

Those Virginia fellas are always ready to offer nice help. Thanks Guys.

A little clarification and a little bit more in the question mode. The other fella is a righty and I haven't seen him really have any area or a high game until game 3.

As to this ball and drilling. This house seems much more jumpy on the left and maybe on the right during warmups but by game 2 the oil is traveling down for the lefty and by the end of practice for the righty.

Very jumpy for pearls on the left. For example yesterday I brought out a Mission Domination drilled lefty but a short span for me on the left. While the Mission X continued to be smooth revvy and powerful smashing recovery. The Mission Domination pearl with a glossy finish was extremely jumpy of course with a loose short fit this was a little slow throwing for me. This with the mirror image of the drilling of the other fella(over bridge and mass bias similar 1 1/2 inches from the thumb). If I drilled one of these bad boys up(one looking at me right now, I would go duller).

What is really amazing to me is that balls that could really find the hole and were plenty strong enough last year can barely carry this year even thought they can find the hole, all symmetrics Sonic X solid, Hot Wire, and even my Tropic Heat. My Spell carries maybe 1/2 the time!

Question.

1. Do our expert bowlers out here think a Rogue Cell cover is weaker than a Mission X cover?
2. Other candidates in the asymmetric side I have are the X Factor Deuce and its smooth Accutread coverstock and also a Mamba hybrid, which I am worried about it's jumpiness.

It seems the answer on the left this year is solid coverstocks with an asymmetric high powered motor!

PS a friend of mine is tearing it up on the left with a pin strong mass bias in track Black Taboo. My Deuce is close to like that now but really doesn't fit the bill for me as is.
