Question about plug cutters/routers...
« on: February 29, 2008, 12:42:41 PM »
I've found a router/plug cutter shield made specifically for cutting bowling ball plugs.

Now what I need to know is what kind of router to buy?

I know nothing about this particular tool, because I've never worked with one. I see routers listed as "fixed-base" and "plunge" and don't know what either means. I don't know what size shank (1/4", etc.) I'll need in order to accept a plug-cutting bit. And, I'd like to know if any other router bits will cut plugs aside from a bit specifically made to do the job.

Any tool experts?

Jess

My two cents.  You need a plunge router so you can adjust the height of the bit. You don't need to buy high quality here, Skil or similar is just fine. The bits are sold as both 1/4 and 1/2 inch. Most routers have collets for both. 1/4" carbide straight bit works well.

I put a piece of masking tape on the ball and adjust the height of the bit with the bit on the tape.  This sets the bit to cut down the plug just above the surface of the ball, and I finish it on the spinner.

You do not need a plunge-type router.
A non-plunge router is still height/depth adjustable.

real......where you at.    I've got a skill 3/4 HP with plug cutter shield with vacuum attachment.   Router pretty new.      Make it worth your while if within decent range of Houston.

Not close to Houston.  No equipment, and no desire to get into the pro shop business.  I was just pointing out that the video gives you a good idea of making a shield, but does nothing as far as giving any idea where to buy the material, any measurements, or anything else as far as actually putting it together.  Great conceptual video, but a poor instructional video.
