thumb/finger and side weight.

When it comes to making a ball legal for static weights, what is the purpose of taking out finger weight and thumb weight vs taking out weight on the PAP or under it to make it legal? How does this affect the reaction of the ball by only taking out finger weight? I ask this because pretty much every pro shop I have been in will just drill a hole in the side of the ball to make it legal. Then I go into a different pro shop, have a ball drilled around 5x3 on a symetric ball and he said he tries never to take out side weight and takes out finger weight to make it legal. Double checked the scale at his pro shop after he took out some of the ring finger and was....

Drillers that believe "CG's do matter" usually want to end up with positive side weight and top weight when they drill a ball strong.  Most balance holes take out a combination of weights.  For example, say your PAP is 5" over and 1" up.  Drilling a hole there will take out primarily positive side weight, but also some finger, and top weight.  Drillers that believe "CG no matter" don't care what the ending statics are as long as they're legal.  They usually locate the balance hole at a position that will both make the ball legal and enhance the desired reaction.  --  JohnP
