Hey guys I have a layout question. Why do some bowlers take balls that have 4-5" pin to cg distances and drill them pin below the bridge with very very low holes. Not a pin as low as a rico layout, but a more "traditional" position just below the fingers. Does this provide a significant reaction difference vs a shorter pin drilled pin down without a hole or a hole closer to the bowler's axis. Whenever I get see a ball in the shop with a long pin, I will drill it pin up, but was wondering what would happen if I drilled it lower. Sorry if its a confusing question.

It kinda depends on the ball......
I had my Virtual Gravity drilled with the pin under the middle finger, and CG is down by the thumb.. I did it so the ball would set up a bit earlier and have a smoother backend reaction.. I think the pin was 3.5 to 4inches
i did have a ole Xfactor Reloaded that had a big pin like 5inches, and did it pin above the ring finger and CG ended up stacked by the thumb hole. lol I was kinda like wow, not much i could really do with that pin....
But generally when i get a ball, I have a general idea of how i want to have it drilled up anyways..

Long pin under finger with a low balance provides an early roll on a dull ball and more midlane on a shiny ball. This drilling was my bread and butter for years. Works especially well on lower end equipment. You get a ton of bang for your buck.
