Long/flat oil question
« on: February 17, 2005, 02:17:15 AM »
Hopefully the correct place to post this question, apologies if not. It may sound basic, but I can see it from a physics viewpoint both ways, not sure which is right....

Scenario: ABC tourney or sport shot league, relatively flat or long. Problem is ball skids past break point. EXCLUDE OTHER FACTORS (please don't hijack the post with side comments) Ignore "tighter line" comments, they are obvious and outside the scope of this discussion. Consider it strictly from a physics viewpoint.

Which of the following is the right way to proceed?

1. Lower RG ball, more surface, less speed...  something in the realm of getting the ball to react earlier because the ball is sliding past without reacting.

OR

2. The earlier reving stuff is wasting energy spinning in the oil and has little left when it finds dry. Go to longer drilling or something that will delay using it's energy until it can find some dry.

Option 1 seems to be the standard answer, but the physics side of the argument don't quite match what I see on the lanes.

Option 2 has been mentioned by a few people as their choice, but doesn't seem to work at all.

I can see the answer both ways logically, but which is right?

My personal preferance is to drill everything for length and then adjust the cover for the condition.
Weaker/higher pin with strong MB just work much better for me no matter what the condition is. This may be due to my lower speed with decent revs and low tilt.
By the way I bowl on 44' sport pattern and 44' THS and use the same type of layout for both, just different cover and/or surface.

If you get caught in the Storm Track beware it could be a Typhoon or Monsoon with Rolling Thunder and Lightning Flashes that when Unleashed may send splintered Wood flying everywhere.

I agree that either one can be true, based on how much oil there actually is in the heads, the covers, etc.  There is a second point though: on most conditions, especially difficult ones, low Rg balls with surface are much easier to read.  Flippier balls are more sensitive, and if you're on a hard shot, how do you figure out where the oil is when the ball reaction is tempermental.
