Losing ball at bottom of swing
« on: October 30, 2005, 04:51:18 PM »
Ok, here's my problem; My spare ball started out w/ a thumb hole a half size smaller than normal due to weather change, over the last 3.5 weeks I've been losing the ball at the bottom of the swing. I've got 4.5 pieces of tape in it and it still falls off of my thumb at the bottom of my swing. At this point my thumb looks like hamburger the hole is sized down(with tape) 2 sizes smaller than normal, it's falling off and tearing me up at the same time. I've narrowed it down to these two and not span because I have the same span on all of my equipment and the rest of it is fine. Am I having a sizing or pitching issue or am I missing something more basic? Any help would be appriciated I thank you in advance.

If it is tight enough to tear up your thumb but it is still coming off early then you must be doing something drastically different.
I suspect that something you are doing is causing you to have a downswing that is WAY to steep. No way to know for sure though without seeing you bowl.

Wrong thumb pitch? Even a small adjustment can do wonders - I tried a used friend's ball some time ago he got from Ebay, and the thumb pithc was a touch too negatiev for me. I could not hold it in the downswing, it just fell off of my thumb and slammed into the foul line. Maybe you have a similar problem? Let your hand and ball be checked in a pro shop. Maybe a thumb slug insert in the old hole with a slightly steeper pitch will do the problem, and you will be able to use a more confortable hole size.

Thanks for all the help, I've changed my pitches a 1/4"+ and that seems to have worked at this time. In my spare ball(no pitch adj) I changed the tape before putting in the new tape I ran a piece of scotchbrite(the brownish/red one) w/ acetone on it inside the hole to clean it out. Then used a piece of wet/dry automotive sandpaper(400) to smooth out the rough part in the back of the thumbhole. Stopped the tear up of my thumb.

Go more forward in the thumb pitch.  Whatever you have now is too much reverse.  You might also want to try shortening the span an 1/8th too
