Thumb slug and pitch?

Picked up a used drill a little while back and still learning to drill balls and had a quick question. Say you have a thumb pitch to drill in a ball thats 3/8 reverse and you are using a thumb slug, do you drill the hole for the slug with a 3/8 reverse also? Thanks.

Yes, because if you drill the slug at 0 pitch and then you drill the thumb hole at 3/8ths reverse, you will probably go through the back of the slug and defeat the purpose. Thats it.

Normally I completely agree with Storm4ever.  But there can be cases where I don't use this procedure.  For example, if I have a customer that wants to experiment with various pitches with 3/8 reverse being the starting point and moving forward from there.  First, I would use a 1 3/8" diameter slug.  Then I would pitch the hole for the slug at 3/16 reverse.  That would allow me to vary the pitches from 3/8 reverse to 0 without cutting through the side of the slug (unless he has an extremely large thumb hole).  --  JohnP

But don't you also have to vary the span when varying the pitch?

Depends on how much the pitch is changed.  When a customer wants to try pitch changes and do it as inexpensively as possible I use the procedure I described and wait until we're done experimenting to change the spans, if required.  --  JohnP
