Hey guys,

I have been contemplating drilling my own equipment for a while now.  I have looked at buying the Jayhawk mini mill, but after reading some feedback on Facebook groups it doesn't do well for installing switch grips or cutting ball plug.  So I have considered buying a Jet mill, and then just buying a ball Jig from Innovative or Jayhawk to complete my project.  Has anyone on here done this type of thing before?  If so, what model Jet mill should I buy, because there are so many different ones, I'm not sure which one would be the best.  I was going to get a bench top mill, but if there isn't a good option, I have room for a stand alone unit.  The jig I was planning on getting was the Innovative clamptite jig as it's what most peo shops around me have and I'm comfortable with.  If not that one then the Innovative New Standard jig that comes with the bit carousel.  Any preference to either of those?  Thanks in advance!

A proper press is expensive. The jugs are also expensive. The drill bits are expensive.  All in all, spending dollars to save pennies.

Try to find a shop going out of business and buy their press. A used high end setup is going to be much better than a new economy set up.

I haven’t personally used a Jet mill, but from what I've heard, the Jet JMD-18 seems like a solid choice for a standalone unit if you're looking to cut ball plugs and install switch grips. It's sturdy and offers good precision for the job. If you're leaning towards a bench top model, the Jet JTM-2 is a great option, but it might be a bit more limited for larger jobs.

As for the jigs, the
Innovative clamptite is definitely a popular choice, and if you're used to it, that's probably your best bet. The New Standard jig with the bit carousel is cool too, especially for faster setups, but it depends on how often you're going to switch between different tasks.
