Low PAP layouts
« on: October 03, 2008, 12:40:05 PM »
Hi everyone, just curious, my PAP is 4 over by 1 inch up, I was wondering how other cope with short pin balls when laying out equipment, short pins for me always end up with cg's in or next to the fingers when I do standard layouts, like a 5 x 3 or even a 4 x 4. Just curious how others deal with this situation.

Why don't you use those layouts and just put the pin under the fingers.  Draw your arc for the pin to pap distance, then your cg to pap distance.  Now where the two lines meet, draw a 1"circle around the intersection.  Now draw a roughly 1" circle around the pin.  You want to then draw a line connecting the 1" to where it meets the arc of the 1" circle around the pin.  Thats going to be your mid line.  Now measure from the 1" pap circle 4" and that and draw your grip and cut lines and you're set.  If you want, check out the post with pictures on bowlingballexchange.com that MeNoRevs posted in the drilling section.  This will help answer any questions

i would do that but then angles and distances with mass bias's and pin buffers is thrown away, and i really want to be able to ulitize layouts that will be continous down the lane and not read early

ice,

First off, you dont have to drill balls with short pins.  I had a person that had a 3.5 PAP and asked a similar question.  I told him that he needed to put the pin below the middle finger and the cg near the center of grip and after plugging and redrilling with that layout, he responded saying the beast had been unleashed from the ball.  FWIW, you can still do 5x3 layouts and have the pin under the fingers.  I have another friend that has a slow ball speed and low track and he wanted something that hooked in oil.  He got his hands on a Granite Gargoyle.  He asked how I would lay it out.  I told him to do a 4.5 x 4, pin below the fingers.  He did exactly that and his response was that it hooked more than anything in his bag.  DO NOT be afraid to do pin down drillings.  If the pin is a 1 inch pin lets say, do a drilling where the pin is below the bridge and cg stacked directly underneath.  That will give you an early, but continuous roll through the pins.

In of and itself, your PAP measurement says that your ball will not read early and will be continious down the lane. If anything your ball will go too long down the lane on oil, which tells me you need layouts that will roll early to socre on this condition. A pin-in ball should work great for you. =:^D

unfortuneatly it would seem that way, however it is not the truth of the matter.I know it sounds contradictory, but all of my balls tend to roll early and die on the back, see my problem is that even though i am a low track player my track circumfrance is that of a person with a high track, my first flare is normaly close to my thumb but way far away from my fingers.

no, it means I have a low pap, meaning less than 4.5 inches on the horizontal measurement, but the unusual part is the track circumfrance for those paps are normaly low and mine is a high number. if it was inverted the track would be closer to the fingers and further from the thumb
