Low Track Drilling Advice
« on: December 20, 2004, 01:28:27 PM »
I would appreciate some sage advice from any of you low-trackers out there. I have a relatively low track (about 24 degrees, PAP is 4 over, 1.5 up). Generally, I am looking to get my ball into an earlier roll without trying to change my normal release. I am considering a drilling where the pin would be closer to my axis (say 1 inch or pin on PAP).  What is everyone's experience with this type of drilling for a low-tracker? My ball speed is on the lower side of medium but not slow so I have to make sure I don't hit a rollout situation. The closest thing I currently have to a drilling like this is a Hammer 3-D Violet Offset that is 2 x 2 with the MB and weight hole beyond the VAL.  With this layout and ball at 800 grit sheen I still tend to be skidding when I hit the pocket, often leaving flat corners. My other balls don't finish in a roll well either: Rule in box finish, V-Black at 600 grit polish, V2 at 600 polish. Would a closer pin to PAP drilling be worth trying or does taking the ball down to 400 or 600 dull make more sense here? Any thoughts are appreciated!

       Thanks in advance,
            Rod

Killer,
Funny you should mention the Freakazoid because I have been looking at that ball because of its very low RG.  My V2 sanded has a similar low RG and it does roll better than my other balls given my lower track. So I may give the Zoid a try. My biggest problem was that my old pro shop guy did not know my PAP and kept giving me 'length' drillings.  My Rule was the only ball I have where my PAP was known before drilling and while good for me on some conditions here I do tend to get an over/under reaction at times.  I am trying different surfaces to see what will work best as I do like the ball.
I was mainly interested in knowing if any lower-track players had any success with a pin-axis drilling compared to other drillings they have tried. If anyone has any experience with that drill I'd appreciate hearing from you.
    Thanks,
      Rod A.

Trying balls with Lower rgs as mentioned, and Asymetrical balls will have sharper break points for you if you want to create backend. Everyone is saying going with pins closer to your pap but being a lower tracker myself, i like to place my pins lower. rather than placing a pin say 2 inches from my pap i will place my pin in my palm or maybe 1 to 2 inches from my palm/center of my grip.

I am able to reduce the ball's length but it will still roll earlier, and not have it roll out so fast, and loose backend reaction.

I have used a layout similar to this on alot of equipment

when placing your pin closer to your pap you create earlier roll but reduce the energy the ball has for the backend, and reduce the flare the ball has.
ex: with mo-rich balls, the closer you place your pin to your pap, the more you reduce the track flare. placing your pin 3 inches or more from your pap maintains the ball in a high flaring position.

In this example you will have alot of track flare, and still have recovery.

this is a just an idea. I would suggest looking at a MoRich Ravage. top notch ball!
