Magic Carpet, forward pitch and span changes...
« on: December 02, 2005, 02:02:00 AM »
I'm goig back to using Ron C's Magic Carpet.

Problem I have, is extremely moist skin. After using the Magic Carpet 2-3 games the skin on the back of my thumb rolls up into a ball, and peels off the thumb.

My specs are: 1/8 reverse in my thumb, about 1/16 left lateral (lefty).
My span (cut to cut) is: 4.75" ring; 4.625 middle.

If I go to forward pitch on the thumb, how much forward ywould you recommend? How much would you recommend shortening the span?

I'm thinking of 3/8 forward without a span change...I think as long as I keep my hand relaxed, and dont squeeze, I will clean the thumb fine. If I squeeze the ball, I will most likely hit my forehead with the ball. I have some doubt that I will clear the thumb. w

Opinions?

On Edit: My current drilling is fine. My finger joint falls into the middle of the finger hole, when I place my thumb in the ball, and lay my fingers over the holes. Using Magic Carpet, I averaged about 20+ pins higher. I stopped using it last May.

For your span 3/8 forward would be a ton especially since you say you have moist skin. I don't see how going forward from where you are now is going to make things better given the problem. Here are the recommended starting points for your span and you are 1/16 forward relatively for even the most flexible of thumbs. Forward is set relative to the span and only based on the ball center to have a uniform way of setting it.

Flexibility     Pitch
150°            3/16rev
135°            1/4rev
105°            5/16rev
90°             3/8rev
75°             7/16rev

StormTrack,
Thanks for the pitch table.
I've tried pitch combinations from 1/8 forward to 3/8 reverse.
In the past, when I've gone down to 0 or 1/8 forward, I had trouble clearing the back of the thumb hole.
Since then my total span has been reduced by 1/8". I thought if I went 3/8 forward, it would be a starting point...working backward from that point.
I'm going to fill the thumb on an old ball...and try it. Was thinking of reducing my span by about another 1/8", which might make the forward more workable.
I'm trying to find a way to use the Magic Carpet without peeling my thumb.
I may also try the  VISE SKIN PROTECTION TAPE...I tried the GREEN tape which rolled off the back of my thumb. The RED tape is supposed to stick better.

Thanks again,

Have you tried putting a bunch of bevel at the back of your thumb hole where you thumb nail meets at the exit point to help you clear.

How flexible is your thumb when checked according to Bill Taylor's method?
An appriximate angle will do.

Are you sure you're not bending ("knuckling") your thumb in the ball?  With a Magic Carpet, that will tear the skin off the back of your thumb every time.  --  JohnP

JonP,
My thumb feels like it is flat in the hole.

I fly out of the thumb hole, redness occurs with MC wherever the carpet touches the thumb, not just the back of the knuckle, where it touches when "knuckling" the hole.

What's frustrating is the fact that I shot 249-269- and then 224 when the skin loosened on the back of the thumb. There is no real pain, until the skin rolls up like a piece of paper, and tears off of the thumb...then it's time to stop bowling.

Thanks for the reply.

Duke--Another type of tape that interests me is the Vice insert tapes.  Lucky Lefty had a post on BR previously and I asked him for more info. but LL seems MIA the past few days.  http://www.viseinserts.com/ta_tape.htm

I am also an MC user for 4 years but have been looking at other tape and also going to try re-fit on old plugged ball next week.  Went to oval thumbs this year and MC doesn't seem to work as well in oval vs. round thumbs....which makes sense.

I don't use Magic Carpets, but I do use white tape in the back of the thumb hole and know all about skin peeling and tearing.

I would suggest trying some Vise beige tape, worked wonders for me. You just apply it to the back of your thumb, and it adds just that little bit of friction, but still comes cleanly off the hand. I don't know if it would work with the Magic Carpet, but it might be worth a shot.

I use the Magic Carpet and Vise Bionic tape, (light blue) works well for me.  Without the tape, the Carpet slowly burned off some skin.  I use 1/2" forward FWIW.

Check your span, do you use grips or thumb slugs? It sounds like there is some serious squeezing going on, I once had the same problem. Is the magic carpet being applied in the back? Do you use anything in the front?
