Title: Magic Carpet
Post by: mogators on January 11, 2006, 02:52:15 AM
How thick is Ron's Magic Carpet?  I only have 1 or 2 pieces of white tape in my ball.  If I take those out and put in MC, will the thumb be too tight?

I would say no, not at all.  The great thing about the Magic Carpet, at least from what I've seen so far, is that even if it feels on the tight side, your thumb still clears easily.  I have yet to hang up on a ball that I have the carpet installed in.  If you email Ron he can send you a sample, usually.

It should fit.  I normally stick in 1 piece of tape.
After removing it, and installing the Carpet, it was a little snug
I opened up the thumb hole just a little bit and it fits fine.

Even with the thumb swelling, it still cleared easily.  I still opened
up my thumb hole just a little bit more for comfort reasons.

Possibly, depending how tight your thumbhole is with the 1 or 2 pieces of tape. If your thumb is a bit loose with the tape, then the Carpet might not be too tight, but if your thumb is tight with the 1-2 pieces of tape, then it will really be tight with the Carpet.

As for myself, my normal thumb hole is 15/16 and if I put a piece of carpet in, it is too tight. However if I enlarge hole 1/64th to 61/16, it is just right. Ask JohnP about this as he is better at it than I am.

According to the info on bowl4fun.com it is about the same thickness as 3 pieces of white tape.

What Brickguy said except that I usually oversize the thumbhole by 1/32, then use one or two pieces of white tape in the front of the hole if necessary.  --  JohnP

Thanks for the feedback guys.  Sounds like I would be borderline without opening the thumbs up a bit.  I'm hoping I can get Ron to send a sample to try out.

mogators...the guys are about right. I would say it would be the equivalent to about 3 pieces of tape. Love this stuff! Shoot an email over to Ron and I'm sure he would be more than happy to send you a sample! Good luck...

John, after a 4 year absence, I am now trying Magic Carpet again as my thumb and swells and shrinks as bad as it ever has. Fingers too so I have to run the grips a bit on the loose side and shim and remove shims as needed.

Back to the Thumb..... Just last week, I enlarged my thumb hole on 2 balls from 15/16 to 61/64 to try the carpet again. On the 15/16 holes, I used 3 and some times 4 pieces of tape and hole was still a bit loose as that is the way I have always had/like my holes. I've now bowled twice with these two balls and it's too early to tell, but I think I may be able to adjust to using the carpet once again. Ordered 10 more pieces today as I only have one left. Any how, I sometimes like a piece of tape in the front of my hole and sometimes 3 pieces when using Deadbaits method of 1/2" 3/8" 1"  on top of each other to give a flat feel on my thumb. With the 1/64th increase I did, I don't think I can add tape to the front of hole, but will try and see what happens. If I can't install that tape, then I may try to enlarge to 1/32  in place of 1/64th as you do.

Try this with the Magic Carpet. I use 1 pc of white tape on the front of the thumb hole and I didn't have to enlarge the hole. The ball fits better than ever, no more knuckling, very clean release with no break-in or red thumb.

I suspect your thumb hole was a little too big to start with.  Ron has told me that quite a few bowlers can use the Magic Carpet without enlarging their hole because it's too big, so the MC gives them a snug feel and quick release.  I have one customer that turns the MC upside down and places the square end right at the top of the hole and on the left side.  It's a matter of what works for the individual.  --  JohnP

John,

Not to big! I don't use a standard round hole. I use a machined Oval thumb slug. Misunderstanding\\ "Place the Carpet 1" to 1 1/4" below the top of the thumb hole so that when you insert your thumb the carpet is just below your knuckle. This all depends on how long your thumb is."

I have one of those thumbs that is not flat when I straignten it. The Carpet is filling the gap below my knuckel keeping the pad of my thumb against the back of the hole. The carpet contacts my thumb below the joint over my thumb nail.

Tom

Tom,

When you say your thumb is not flat when you straighten it, does that mean your thumb from the knuckle to the fingernail curves UPWARD? My thumb does that.

My best estimate Magic Carpet is about as thick as 4 pieces of white tape.

I'd go along with that.. I use MC in every ball.. good product, just watch for thumb swelling.. I've got mine drilled so I can ADD tape behind the MC, so when the thumb starts to swell, pull the tape out and things are good as new..  just wish I wouldn't go through them as fast as I do..

Funny, I have a few magic carpets that have lasted me almost 18 months now. I still have the problem of using a ton of tape (moving it in and out of the hole) but the release i get is so much more consistent with carpet that I really feel like it helps my game.

So, which way is upside down?  My instructions say to put the rounded end 1/4" from the top of the hole.

I tried it from a couple that Ron sent me.  I liked how it felt and will be buying some to try on one of my balls again.
