I'm thinking of putting a 2x2 on a symmetric ball, looking for early hook and controlled backend. I'd love to keep the flare rings off the fingers, but I flare pretty close with anything pin down. Anyone have experience with a 1-2 inch drilling and a high track? Does the pin need to stay as high as possible, or does the reduced flare keep the track off the fingers?

All you have to do is keep the pin in line with your PAP and the track.
Draw a line from the PAP through the pin to a point above the fingers dissecting the track. This is a safe guard to help protect against flaring over the middle finger. When you add the weight hole, keep it on this same line as it passes through the PAP on the opposite side from the pin or below.

Ric, I understood what you are saying, but if you stand back and read that, it may not have come out clearly. ??

BW, Draw a line from the PAP through the pin to your track. Where this line meets the track is where the bow tie will be when the ball flares. Sooo, keeping the pin up as high as possible will get the bow tie up higher and hopefully make the track flare around the fingers and not on to them.

In your case the pin will probably need to be slightly below your fingers or higher. The reduced flare will probably just keep the track from flaring away from the fingers as fast. Your initial track is where you throw it no matter what. Should still flare away from the fingers though.

I track pretty high and have two balls drilled with 2.5 PIN-PAP's (one sym, one Asym) and neither track over my fingers

I've got a Cell I drilled with a 1 1/2" pin to pap and I also have a high track. I put the pin just above the line between the pap and the top of the ring finger hole. Track comes very close but doesn't track over the holes. Remember, with a short pin to pap you'll have less flare so things are less critical.

The issue isn't the pin to PAP distance but whether the pin is in your safe zone. And even then other issues have effect. As Moon pointed out, pin to PAP distances further away from the 3 3/8" max flare position don't flare as much. Less flare = less chance of hitting the holes. Also, PAP locations with fairly large up vertical PAP components have tracks that begin angled away from the finger holes. These tracks are less likely to flare into the finger holes than are tracks with PAPs at 0 or negative vertical components. Bowlers with a high, inverted track are the most likely to flare into the finger holes. -- JohnP
