Wondering why someone would want a hook-set type drilling? Doesnt the ball roll out and loose energy? seems like it would be a very condition specific ball reaction. Is regular label leverage the most forgiving drilling to put into a ball. Being rev challenged is a hookset drilling worse for me?

Matching the surface of your ball to the lane condition you are bowling on is of primary importance. Pin placement is the next biggest factor. Everything else is secondary.

A "hook/set" reaction is different from a rollout reaction in that the ball changes direction and enters the pocket at the proper angle with the hook/set, while the rollout shot has the ball just losing energy and straightening out.
If you enter the pocket at the proper angle, it doesn't matter AS MUCH that it has spent its energy. That is where the "set" part comes in. The ball is "set" in its angular path, and won't have the deflection that a straighter, "rollout" shot will have.

USBC studies showed that CG and Mass Bias strength had less of an affect than those related to coverstock. Less does not mean none and can certainly be use to fine tune ball reaction.
