Am I the only one that sees this??? Drilling's?
« on: March 19, 2005, 06:06:28 PM »

People may bash me for this, and this has probably been mentioned like 1,082.56877 times (I think I even had a topic on this a while back), but on all the drill sheets from all the companies they say that a MB in the strong position has more backend than a MB under/left of thumb (in, or near track).

I drill most of my stuff with 2 drill patterns...

1.) 4 3/4" x 4" (with MB right of thumb)
2.) 4 3/4" x 5" (with MB in the thumb, or left of thumb in the track)

I'm a Medium speed stroker with a High Track and with Medium Axis Tilt, about 40-50 degrees of Axis Rotation, and Medium Revs. With a PAP of close to 5 1/2" over and 5/8" up.

Maybe it's just my style but I am just not seeing the 1st drilling to be "long and strong" like all the companies claim... and the 2nd drilling to be "long and arc/control" like they also claim.

As I do more testing with more balls (even with some of the same model makes of balls drilled with these 2 different patterns to get a clear conclusion), I am finding the opposite to be true! I'm getting more backend out of the 2nd drilling and more of a hook/set, or rollout, from the 1st drilling (now if the CG was kicked WAY out, then rollout would be expected, but the CG is just barely kicked out here).

I talked to a driller friend of mine who has drilled for Pro's and Regional guys for MANY YEARS... and he says that what I'm seeing is correct! I drill my own stuff, but if I asked him to drill me up a ball for say Medium to Medium/Heavy Oil and I wanted it go long and then turn hard on the backend... then he'd drill it up like the 2nd drilling (not the 1st drilling that most say is the Strong Position type drilling), eventhough some will say this drilling has the MB in the so-called "weak" position... I don't see it like that! I see a strong backend with this drilling. And I'm starting to think I'm seeing better pin carry also with this drilling (less 10-pins)!

I am actually getting more recovery from inside with this so-called "weak" Mass Bias drilling (and more backend continuation through the pins), than with the so-called "strong" Mass Bias drilling. I'm just not seeing any finish in the backend with the so-called "strong" backend drilling.

I feel like I'm "going against the grain" with this theory, or maybe some will say I'm an idiot... but I know of 1, maybe 2, of the drilling guru's on this site will agree with this because I've seen them say this same thing before on here. I hope they will post their thoughts on this.

So basically when people asked for their ball to be drilled with the famous long and strong drilling of say 5" x 4" (with MB right of thumb for Right Hander)... is the reaction they are getting on the lanes REALLY the strongest backend drilling they could have gotten???

Hmmm...
