Switch Grip
« on: August 02, 2006, 12:35:13 PM »
I'm going to be having a ball that has a switch grip thumb insert, without the actull insert. Doesn't sound like anything I'd be interested in as I'd rather have a regualar slug. The size of this says it can be replaced with a 1 1/2 inch slugs. That sounds huge as my slugs are all mostly 1 1/8 I belive and my thumb size is a tad under an inch. So If I replaced this with a mandatory 1 1/2 inch slug would it look stupid or feel weird with a smaller hole in something that large? Or is it hopeless and I will need to plug the thumb?

As far as I know, 1 3/8" is the largest diameter slug available.  --  JohnP

Turbo has 1 1/2 thumb slugs.  Duo colors only... black and white or orange and yellow.

You just need the bigger slup to fill the hole/Shaft of the Switch Grip. It is smarter (and cheaper) to use a bigger slug than drilling the shaft out, plugging and re-drilling the thumb, especially when the span matches your hand quite well.
The bigger thumb slug can be drilled normally, according to your hand, and you will feel no difference. It might just look a little unusual - I have done something similar on my XXcel, because the old 1 1/4" thumb slug did not fit anymore, so my driller opened the hole to 1 1/2" and put the bigger urethane slug into it, re-drilling the ball. Works fine, is fast and cheap.

Just plug it without taking the sleeve out, all you're doing is making a thumb slug in place, just make sure the inside of the sleeve still has a sharp edge.

Oops, I stand corrected.  I don't have an 1 1/2" bit anyway.  --  JohnP

I discussed it with a pro shop and it looks like it will work. So I'm going to try this switch grip out..what the heck.

However, it was around 20 bucks just for the sleave? I saw one on a random bowling website for 12.How much is it for the outer part in case I am interested in getting one of these on a future ball. Wonder how expensive this could get. On Buddiespro shop it says an assembly is 45 bucks with 10 sleaves.

Also, for those that have these switch grips, do you have just one sleave you use and switch the same inner sleave with every ball? Is this such a good thing or is it too time consuming?

I just glued a 1 3/8 inch slug in the Switch Grip sleeve and then drilled my thumb with the correct pitch in the slug. Unless the pitches between the sleeve and your thumb are considerably different, that should work just fine. Especially if the fingers are either very close spanwise, or you are plugging them anyway.

That's an interesting idea. I never thought of just leaving it in there then putting a slug in it. Interesting...

Most always for a few reasons I will leave the actull thumbhole alone and not plug it and just plug the fingers. The pitches in this switch grip outer sleave is at 0 like mine, so that works.
