PSA on VAL or near thumb?
« on: December 06, 2017, 07:21:55 PM »
I'm getting a ball redrilled and have this written both ways... Need to fix the notes I've got.

All other factors being equal, which asym layout will stabilize faster, one with PSA on VAL or near thumb?

Thanks

PSA on VAL. When the PSA is near the thumb, it takes a longer transition to "right the ship" so to speak. Just be careful not to confuse transition length of the MB (PSA), and ball motion through the backend of the lane, though.

As you move any objects towards the VAL, it was stabilize faster. Pin near the pap stabilizes faster, giving you a smoother look. The closer you put the MB to the pap, the faster it stabilizes. So that becomes a smoother look at the breakpoint than a MB further away.

Yeah, pretty much what Impending Doom said.

Also to add to that, having a ball that "transitions faster", doesn't always equate to more motion, or a stronger motion, especially if the ball has transitioned before the end of the pattern. A weaker Mb (PSA) placement of say 5.5"-6" can have the look of a "stronger" reaction covering more boards, because the ball transitions at the right time. A ball with a 3"-4" MB, will transition faster, but could have the illusion of not hooking as much and appear "weaker" because the ball has satisfied it's preferred spin axis so quickly, that it softens the backend reaction. The flip side of that, is if there is enough oil on the lane for the early transition ball to actually go through the proper phase at the right time on the lane to actually show a stronger reaction, or more hook, than a ball with a slower transition drilling (further away from the PAP) that would shoot through the breakpoint.

Again, this is as you said, with all other things being equal, pin placement from PAP and VAL.

Well, strong is a relative term. Back when Track was doing the Freak line, I drilled my Phenom with my normal assym layout, which is 65*5*40. Ball was an absolute dart. The core was so tall and thin that with that layout, it never got into a roll. So after that, all balls with that kind of core in it got drilled 40*5*65, which was INFINITELY better. So a "strong" MB placement didn't mean the same thing as a strong MB placement on say a Dream On.

Good data, and thanks again. It is understandable, but will need experimentation for me to work thru it...
