Optimum tightness...
« on: June 07, 2009, 02:32:31 AM »
I've been tweaking the tightness of my thumbhole lately.  I'm now at the point where I literally have to shove my thumb into the hole to get it all the way in. (I've probably gone a little overboard with the tape and Ron C's Magic Carpet.)

In your opinion, how tight should a thumbhole be?  Just tight enough so you don't drop it?

Even though I like a snug thumb, I have to say that "shoving" the thumb in sounds too tight, even for me.

What that causes is excess friction, which causes callousing, which changes the size of your thumb making it larger. If your hole is too tight, that becomes a never ending cycle ( Take it from experience. I have to "sand" my calluses down with a pumice board occasionally )

For me, the perfect thumbhole size is where the thumb just slides in smoothly without leaving any space on the sides, then using tape to adust the front-back fit. To achieve this, I use oval thumb sleeves.

When I forget to use the pumice board on my calluses, my thumbhole gets "shove it in" tight as well. When everything is right (for me), I have to blow just a touch of moisture into the thumbhole to creat the "snugness" I like.

For me, with my arthritic thumb joint and resultive reverse pitch, I need to keep it pretty snug so that I control the release point without losing it early.

you can always add a vent hole I use them to kep my thumb snug. Its a way to release the pressure in the thumb hole.

Secure enough that you don't have to squeeze to hold the ball, loose enough that the ball comes off your thumb cleanly when it's time to release.  Size and pitch both are factors.  --  JohnP
