for no-thumb or 2handed bowlers, per USBC.."If you have a ball with no thumb hole, finger holes only, you may have up to three ounces of top (or bottom) weight.

If you want it to be classified as a thumbhole, you must be able to reasonably demonstrate that it can be used for gripping purposes. If not, then it will be classified as a weight hole. You can have a weight hole with no thumbhole but it must meet the same specifications. If you have a thumbhole that you cannot demonstrate that it can be used as such, you may not have a weight hole in addition to this."

And as I read the rule the 1 oz side and finger/thumb weight limits also apply to thumbless balls. I assume you draw the lines through the bridge and through the finger holes to determine the sides and finger/thumb halves. -- JohnP

I think you must have a thumb hole per USBC rules.

This was emailed to me from Tim Robben, Senior Rules Counselor...So no, you dont have to have a thumbhole...Yes, the 1oz finger or thumb wt applies and side wt still has to be within 1oz...it may take some tinkering but ball can be drilled with out thumbhole, as has been said, between the bridge is the center of grip..

The ball will still have a difference between finger and thumb weight with or without a thumb hole, you still have a cg and where it's place will determine that as well as + or - side weight!

I had a junior bowler that I did some balls with no thumbhole, I just tried to get short pins a low top weights to make it easier to be legal.
