I had been contemplating trying no finger grips for awhile and finally had an old sledgehammer that g_thing gave me so I had Kurt plug it up and redrill it no grips and used it for the first time Monday night in league and really like it. I shot 665 with 2 clean games. I have been having some finger pain with the grips so I thought I would try no grips to see if it helped in that area and it did. My fingers felt fine after 3 games.

I am going to use the summer leagues to keep trying no grips. I am drilling up a couple of other balls (sling blade and vicious strike) to try before I change out any of my newer equipment that currently have grips.

I was curious for all you people that don't use grips, are the holes supposed to be tight or kind of loose? My finger holes are a tad bit loose, so I just used some white tape to snug them up. My fingers swell and go down alot so I had him make the holes a bit bigger so I could adjust for that.

All in all, I am looking forward to this "experiment"..

I use grips now but bowled for years without them (before they had them.........). I believe it's personal preference on how tight the holes should be. I always left room for tape but I liked (and still do with grips) tight holes - you could tell by the burn marks on theinside of my fingertips..........

Mine sometimes are a tisker loose if I haven't bowled in a few days, but after a few tosses, they are swelled up enough to fit snugly.

I swiched 3 years ago, and I will NEVER go back to grips!

I like mine fairly snug.  If they are loose at all, I bury my fingers in too far and end up tearing the skin at the knuckle.  I don't mind tape in my thumb hole, but I never cared for it in my finger holes.  It seems like once I get it tight enough, I tend to "roll" the tape a bit.  Fortunately, my fingers rarely shrink or swell, but I did have them swell enough once that I could only insert them halfway.  That was the only day that having grips would have been nice.

Loose or snug is up to you; personally I like mine very loose.  In fact I don't mind if they're is as much as a 1/8" gap between my fingernail and the edge of the hole.  I don't have much of a bevel in them either, though I've seen some that were really rounded over.  Really, it's all a matter of what feels right to you.

Congratulations on leaving the dark side (grips) and joining us "au natural" types.

Start with the fingers much too tight to put in all the way(should go about half way). Then use a bevel knife and sandpaper to create whatever oval is needed. As you work out the holes you will end up with a funnel shape will self limit how deep the fingers will go if done correctly. You never want to be able to go past the joint,I like mine to snug up about 1/8" before the joint. If you do this correctly, you will end up with fingers that fit like you stuck them into a ball of clay! They will not hurt anywhere and will adjust themselves to swelling automatically. You will be able to set your grip by just inserting your fingers as deep as they will go(they will self limit to 1/8" from the joint or close to that)I have bowled as many as 80 games in one day with NO finger problems! They don't wear out or come loose and the release is much more consistent for me.

Gave up grips last year. Not only do I have less trouble with fingers splitting on the callous (doesn't happen at all anymore), but it just feels better. I also like having the fingers closer together.

Jim,

Sounds like this might work out for you. As I told you this
weekend the next ball I get, I am going to go without grips
too. Just about everyone down here in San Antonio does not
use grips. Also, that tape you gave me is great. See ya.

I like mine just a hair loose but then again, my fingers don't really swell much.  But it's all about preference.

Glad to hear you tried it out.  You know what they say, "once you go grips you never go back"......Uh, maybe not.  But still.  I went no grips last fall and never looked back.  SO much better for me.  Cleaner release (my fingers hung too much with any kind of grips) which means more revs.  Plus, one thing about no grips, is that you can actually feel the pitch of your finger holes, so it's important you get those right.

I swiched from grips to no grips in 96 and probably won't go back. I was having to replace them every 3 months or so from just wearing them out! Now that is just money in my pocket. )

Just curious, what kind of finger pitches are people with no grips using. I have currently have 1/16th under, looking to go 1/16th away..

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated..

Grips or no grips, your finger pitch (forward/reverse) should be based on your joint flexibility.  --  JohnP
