My track...
« on: January 20, 2004, 03:59:36 AM »
I bowl on heavily oiled lanes with a Brunswick Monster SmashR.  I have learned all I can about drillings, etc.  But I have not been able to find the track on my ball (had it for 3 months now).  I am assuming that my ball has soaked up too much oil (I've heard PK 18 soaks up easily).  Also, because I can see a vague imprint when I press my hand on it.  Has my ball soaked up too much oil to see a track, or what the hell is wrong?  I am determined to find my track, PAP so I can become knowledgeable of drillings.  I can see some rings, but they are not complete and wide (maybe 3/8 inches), and in very odd locations.  Help, I am very confused.

PK 18 does not absorb any more oil than any other dull resin or particle coverstock.

If yours was in box condition and everything you say above is true, it has more than likely absorbed a lot of oil and this should have affected it performance to a medium degree. It should be obvious. Even Brunswick says resin balls should be rejuvenated (have the oil extracted) ever 60-90 games.

What does this have to do with drilling?
Clean the ball, sand it with 800 grit and throw it down the middle with your normal release. It should be easy to see your initial track. Take it to a good pro shop and they should be easily able to find your PAP for you.

I was just wondering, since drillings are based off your PAP, and since i couldn't find my track, then I couldn't find my PAP.

Thanks for your help.

a_ak57 -- If you're not able to locate your track, place a piece of white tape about 4 1/2 inches horizontally and 3/4 inch vertically away from your grip center on the side of the ball away from the track.  Then have someone watch you roll the ball (very difficult to see the early travel of the ball yourself).  If the tape appears stationary for the first 15 feet or so of travel, you were lucky enough to hit your PAP on the first try.  More likely, you will have to adjust the location of the piece of tape and throw again.  Your observer will be able to tell if the tape is rotating more or less than the first time.  Keep adjusting the location of the tape until it appears stationary for that first 15 feet of travel.   When you finally have the correct position of the tape, measure horizontally and vertically from your grip center to the tape.  Those are your PAP measurements.  Your pro shop operator should be glad to help you, and he will probably be able to identify your track.  Good luck  --  JohnP
