Name Your Favorite Layout
« on: August 30, 2007, 09:52:41 AM »
I have read and seen that many people prefer a certain drilling or have a favorite drill pattern for their balls.  I have been bowling for about a year and have yet to find mine.  I am wondering what your favorite drilling is, why, and what your specs are(PAP, Speed, RPM's,...).  Thanks.

PAP     4 5/8"ish
Speed     17mph
RPM    300
Favorite Drill ?

Mine is pin 5 1/2" from PAP, 1" up from midline, 45* cg w/a hole on my VAL below my midline.

This puts the pin under my bridge and the CG in the thumb positive quadrant...this allows me to put the hole down.

I like this layout because I can keep the ball from overreacting on most conditions...but still have the ability to play inside and get the ball to change direction.

I don't use it on everything.....but it is my most commonly used one.

4 1/2 x 4 with the pin just about under the ring. I have it in the only two balls I use right now and it has seemed to solve my 7-pin problem by creating an earlier ball reaction. I spin the ball and it allows me to spin it and still play the outsides without creating too sharp of an angle that kicks the four around the seven.

I'm man enough to admit I stroke with the left hand and it feels good.

Depends on the strength of the coverstock, but normally i prefer about 4 1/2 to 5" high pin and MB at about 80*

Profile:  18 mph, 500+ rev rate, 5 1/2 PAP

I have two drillings that I use commonly.

1.  4 1/2 stacked with a weighthole (most common).  I like this layout simply because it gives me a little more midlane to prevent a true skid flip reaction.  But, not too much midlane so as to kill my backend reaction.  It is a "happy medium" layout for me.  This layout allows me to bowl on a variety of conditions and play anywhere on the lane depending on conditions.

2.  5 x 4 with a weighthole.  I use this layout for when I need to ball to get me a little more length down the lane.  But, if I stack the cg with a longer pin to PAP distance, the backend is uncontrollable.  So, I kick the cg out just far enough to put a weighthole in order to control the breakpoint better.
