Need ball and layout help for bowler with track on VAL
« on: August 17, 2007, 05:55:44 AM »
Hello experts,

I am posting this for another contact in Germany - for a PAP/track challenge.
I need some drilling and maybe ball recommendation for a lefty bowler whose track runs more or less on the VAL - on the ball's equator, like a totally shifted full roller.

I have no idea how this can happen at all, and no concrete PAP coordinates, but it must be only something 1.5" over?

I can provide some video footage and a picture of a current ball with indicated track and drilling

http://home.arcor.de/dm-beobachter/lefty_PAP/

Further info: low speed (14mph) and revs (230RPM), preferred line is 15-7 on medium oil (35-38 ft. length), and I suppose this where the video was taken.

If anyone knows a drilling for this player that gets the ball to move and finish in the back  end, I'd highly appreciate it. I'd also pass ball recommendations - my suggestions would be a higher RG solid reactive or light load particle for good control and grip.

Thanks a lot in advance

To me, admittedly a non-expert, it looks like his thumb is exiting the ball late. It's almost as if it's coming out almost in sync with his fingers. He's tracking almost like a spinner, and he's very near the top of the ball, but he's not getting the length that spinners get. In the second video, it looks like his thumb may not be all the way in the ball.

Basically, I'm saying that he probably needs to work on his release and definitely get an accurate PAP measurement before any real suggestions can be made.

He is a low tracker, and 1.5 inch pap is a good estimate. drill a ball for him that is 3 inches from pap. it will likely fall below his middle finger. Just make sure it's something strong and high end with surface. you can fine it from there.

Suggestions would be an Odyssey, or anything from morich basically.

Not to pick nits or anything, but he can't track on his VAL unless the ball flares onto it.  Some high-flare balls like the Cherry Bombs or SD-73 could do that, but since the VAL is perpendicular to the midline through the PAP, it starts life as far away from the track as is possible.

He's just a really low tracker, though maybe he's more like Fagan than other typical low trackers.  Fagan's got a goofy PAP but a full-sized track, unlike most small-track spinners.

Thank you for comments and suggestions. I guess we'll try a real low-track layout and see waht happens. Maybe a high mass bias ball with some surface will make the orb work for him, too?

Anyone else some ideas?

That's not an unusual track for a lefty.  It is fairly low, but it looks like it has a pretty normal axis tilt.  I would look at a pin to PAP distance in the 3 - 3 1/2" range with the pin under the fingers and a 75 degree MB.  (Depending on the exact PAP coordinates, the pin may end up to the right of the fingers.)  That should start the ball up fairly early but still give a strong back end.  Another good option would be a Rico1 layout.  That will read the midlane well but won't have as much backend pop as the 75 degree, very controllable.  Either way, adjust the surface as needed to get the desired reaction.  --  JohnP
