Need drilling advice for friend
« on: February 05, 2007, 04:50:31 AM »
He is a 215 average bowler who has bowled without a thumb for 30 years.  He is now 59 and stilgoing strong.  Here is his delemma he throws about 14mph and has many revs due to the lack of thumb.  Problem we bowl in a dry town.  He has lost ball speed is last couple of years due to age.  He is frustrated because he cant use reactives or particles dues to his combo of ball speed and revs.  He uses strictly plastic rubber and urethane.  With his loss in ball speed he is lacking hitting power due to the lack in technology and covers.  He wants to use resin or particle even the weakest of reactives for him hook way to much is there a particular drilling for someone such as this with slow ball speed and high revs he wants something that just has a smooth arch for him looking for a drilling layout that would accomplish this.
Any and all suggestions appreciated please pm me with ideas.

My suggestion would be to put the pin closer to his axis (1-2 inches and the cg in or near center grip.  This will allow the ball to have a smooth transition down at the breakpoint and be more controllable.  He can use something weak such as a Tornado Warning or other entry level reactives.  But, it is all in the drilling and cover prep.  Hope this helps and best of luck.  BTW....if he were to use something with a pancake weight block like the Tornado Warning, he could put the pin in the center of grip simply because there is no block.  Balls with a weight block, pin closer to axis will give him more control.

If reactive covers are too much for him, there's only so much he can accomplish with layout.  If he wants more hit, he'll need something with a core in it, I think that'll do more than a weak reactive with a weak layout.  Many of the low-end (read "little hooking") reactives have really weak cores anyway.

I'd go with an XXXL, Slate Blue Gargoyle, XXL, or black Pure Hammer.  The first is plastic (only plastic with a core, so they say), the next two are pearl urethanes, and the last is a solid urethane.

ditto with TwoHands, the only drawback with pin axis drilling is sometimes lack of punch at the deck, with his rev rate it maybe not a prob as much with someone using a thumb.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one
