storms #2 drill sheet what pin to buy
« on: July 10, 2004, 12:14:01 AM »
On storms #2 drill sheet they have the pin 4 1/4" from pap and the drill I am looking at is D. (my pap is 5 1/8 right and 1 3/16 up)  What specs should I buy to accomplish this drill.

charlee323 -- First, be sure you are getting what you want.  On the drill sheet I looked at, the MC2 locations on the diagram are labeled A, B, C, and D, but the verbal description of the location and reaction are labeled A, B, and C,  The A in the verbal description matches up with the B in the diagram, the B with the C, and the C with the D.  For the C in the verbal description (D on the layout), I would look for a ball with a 3 to 3 1/2 inch pin and 2 to 2 1/2 ounces of top weight.  You are going to have to drill a balance hole for this layout, so other balls would work.  The ball I've recommended will probably end up with about 1 3/4 oz of side weight, which takes a reasonably sized hole to get back to legal.  The finger/thumb weight should be OK.  Be sure the pin ends up in the safe zone (it should).  --  JohnP

thanks, I realized that yesterday before I posted; how they didn't line up right.  This drill was recommended to me by a pro shop person I ran into a couple weeks ago and I didn't think to ask about the needed specs.  What do you refer to as the safe zone?  When I laid this out on paper, the pin was under the ring finger, the cg pin distance was 3 1/2.  I understand there will be some differences dealing with a ball compared to a piece of paper.  My pro shop guy doesn't understand this layout and has never drilled it.  I asked at another pro shop and there response was, why would you want that drill.  I would contact the guy that recommended the drill to me, but he is 70 mile away; and I really do not want to drive that far.

charlee323 -- Draw a line from your PAP to your bridge.  Points to the right or above this line are in the "safe" zone.  This mainly is important for high tracking 3/4 rollers to assure that the ball doesn't flare over the finger holes. The following link will take you to the drilling instructions for the Hammer Big Blue.  Scroll to the bottom for a diagram of the safe zone.

thanks for the info, I flare a couple of inches from my finger and fairly close to my thumb; when I talk to my driller I will see what he thinks.  This may be why he felt he couldn't accomplish this drill, because the pin will need to be under the ring finger or drill the ring finger into the pin.  I will talk to my driller more and show him my sketches and see which way he wants to go.
