finger pitch
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:13:02 AM »
Can not enough reverse pitch in the fingers result in an inability to clear the thumb? I feel I am not getting a clean release, and when I put my thumb in without the fingers its snug but easy to slide in and out. However, with the fingers and thumb in I can't even hardly get my thumb out the ball. If I have to back off a shot I have to take my fingers out first to get the thumb out.

Yes, if your finger joints are stiff and you don't have enough reverse finger pitch for that stiffness it can cause problems getting out of the thumb.  Essentially it makes the span feel about 1/4" longer than it actually is.  --  JohnP

To go into more depth, what happens is your second finger joint can't bend so your fingers lay flat on the ball because it has to make up for the lack of bending in the first joint.  This effectively lengthens the span.  --  JohnP

makes complete sense which would probably be why I need a ton of front bevel in my thumb to get out clean.

If your span is wrong...pitch is irrelevant...

Heck - if you are using Turbo Lifts or Power Lifts, the span IS longer than it "actually is"

JustRico makes a good point about the spans, I was assuming they were correct and just focusing on pitch.  --  JohnP

My spans are good, its actually in a ball I got used on here that I didn't want to plug the fingers. So the pitches are different and not the reverse I am used to and I took most the reverse and left out the thumb on this one. Figured it was the finger pitch not the thumb pitch causing the hang up.

How can you make any assumptions when you have nothing the same on this span as you do on your other equipment?
You took the reverse and left out of your thumb and you hung up....REALLY?

I have to agree with JustRico I had similar problems as you described and when all was said & done, I found a new pro shop driller who shortened my span and actually changed my thumb pitch from from 1/8th reverse to 1/8th forward pitch.  This change has greatly improved my release and game.  The span change wasn't drastically shorter, but it made a big difference as I got the proper relaxed fingertip grip and I don't subconsciously squeeze my grip like I did before.  Bottom line, it has helped to free up my armswing and increased my speed & rev rate.  My old span and reverse thumb pitch caused me to have problems exiting the thumbhole cleanly and my release was definitely inconsistent.  If you have another pro shop driller in your area with a good reputation, I'd definitely recommend that you discuss the problems you're having clearing the thumbhole and then have your span re-checked.

I could be wrong, but I think he's saying he plugged or slugged the thumb hole and redrilled it with his normal hole size and pitches, changing the pitches that were in the ball when he bought it.  --  JohnP

Any suggestions for someone who is double jointed in the fingers/ When I put my fingers in the inserts up to the first joint then put my thumb in the ball. I cannot release the fingers until my thumb comes out. It seems to me that it makes me more apt to hit up on the ball, which I don't want to do, Any suggestions????
