Need Help....just got a Hy-Road
« on: May 14, 2017, 08:48:25 PM »
Layout Masters and Drilling Guru's I could really use your help. I just ordered a Hy-Road to use on Short Sport Patterns like the Cheetah, ABT #8, etc. My stats are:

MPH - 18.5
Rev Rate - 300 to 325 (working on it)
PAP - 5 1/4 over 7/8 up
Axis Rotation - 70 to 90 (was consistently 90, working on it)
Axis Tilt - 10 degrees

What would be a good layout?  I'll be getting an IQ Tour this week also to play these patterns.

The Hy-Road will hopefully become my "go-to" ball.

Your help is hugely appreciated!

With low tilt and high rotation a HyRoad probably wont be a go to ball on shorter patterns unless you drill it with a short pin-pap layout (i.e. 2-2.5") and change the surface.

The IQ tour on the otherhand could very well be a "go to" ball on shorter patterns

Thanks!!!  Would you suggest pin Up or pin down?

Pin up, or pin in your ring finger.

Thanks!  Just curious.....normally my balls aren't drilled with the pin that close to to PAP because of ball speed. Would this be a 4x4x2 with high flare or a 4x4x1 for strong backend?  Most of the time my gear is punched 3" to 5" Pin to pap. Wondering what reaction I should be looking for.

I love the science side of all this and wish I had my own press and a few million to just play with different layouts.

The science side becomes considerably less interesting the more you get into it and realize that at the end of the day, all the planning and science and intention on the front end means absolutely zero if you don't have an eye for ball reaction.  The more bowling math I learn, the less I like bowling math lol . . it just takes something uncomplicated and makes it complicated with the whole intent being to make it uncomplicated . .  Bowling math just confuses people when stuff that is "supposed to work" doesn't end up working, then you wonder what you missed or what you did wrong, when most of the time what you did wrong was pay any kind of attention to bowling math in the first place.

In my finding, unless you're purposely driiling the guts out of a ball, the lower the diff, the stronger you should drill it. IQ Tour Solid is very smooth, so best case scenario is to drill it to be strong and angular ,(4*4*1) so you don't start leaving corners when you move in.

But corners when you move in is the IQ Tour's wheelhouse lol, probably why I've never been that much of a fan.  It's great at getting 9 every shot.  Now sometimes that's a really good thing, but I've found the Trick to be an improvement in virtually every way.

Well said. One of the reasons why I stopped doing all the angles, and the blah blah.. Guess what for the most part they all roll well! I have a slightly less diversified bag, I still shoot honor scores, I perform well in local sport competitions...

"Yo wanna do me a pin up, no x hole marvel Pearl Pro shop guy?"

That's the end of the conversation hahaha..
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

I took the approach of having my PSO recommend some pin up, pin down, x-hole, no x-hole layouts. Then once I have found some that my eye likes seeing going down the lane, I stick with those. Something I like for asym solids, asym pearls, sym solids, and sym pearls.

Usually about anything between 4-5' pin and 30-50 degree VAL angles will do the trick on about any of them.

Yeah I have two major layouts I stick with, outside of that I'll usually keep angles pretty similar, will just adjust pin distance most of the time.  Nothing drives me crazier than hearing, "ok, so I drilled this ball 57 x 4 3/32 x 46 . ."  Good for you, man.  Good for you.

Oh, I agree, the Trick looks better if you're moving into the middle of the lane and cutting.the heads than the IQ. If you're not trying to go too left to right, it's much better. If you're trying to go 18 to 3 with an IQ drilled 50*5.5*65, it's going to be a dimefest

Lol hopefully getting those filmed and at least one up on Friday . . but no, one of my essentials is absolutely not an IQ Tour.  Now I WILL say I'm also going to do a tournament essentials series as well, and the IQ Tour is in the mix for that.
