Need help w/a ball situation...
« on: August 27, 2006, 08:03:33 AM »
I've been posting lately about me wanting a second coming of a Triumph AMP.  I had it drilled pretty much label, pin right above the ring finger (righty), w/label in palm.  I used this ball on a THS, and it was great, it held if I pulled, came back if I let it go, due to control drilling and the particle pearl cover.  I've wanted a 2nd version of this, and then realized I might've done something a lot of others do.  I've been told the AMP was meant for med-heavy, and I threw it on just med conditions.  So is this a case of strong ball, weak drilling?  It seems like the label drill is for me, it gives good length, w/good backend. So I'm thinking of buying another particle pearl ball, maybe a double agent, and getting it label.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Any thoughts? yes.

1. Just because a ball is for "medium-heavy" does not mean, everyone will be able to use it for that.

2. Actually reviews indicated its potential range was for mostly for medium oil.

3. There are particle pearls and then there are particle pearls. Their designed strength depends on 3 items:
a) the strength of the base resin in which the particles are placed.
b) the type of particles and their load (% of particles to resin)
c) the strength of the core.

4. The AMP had a super low RG with a very high differential. BTM's (Bowling This Month) review indicated extreme length for a ball that handled medium oil and an EXTREME backend at that time, 2003.

When I analyze those results, it tells me that the ball had a mild combination of resin base & particle load. Many particle pearl balls today get much less length and usually handle medium to medium-heavy oil. So relatively speaking this was a mild particle pearl.

Regarding the Double Agent, reviews, so far, while they don't always tell you the whole stroy as it pertains to your own use of this ball, indicate the DA, a sanded dull particle pearl, will be very early hooking compared to the AMP and is designed, as it comes out of the box, for medium-heavy to heavy oil. It also has a very low RG and a high differential for lots of flare.

Maybe the closest replacement for the AMP might be the Columbia U-Turn Particle pearl, as it gets lots of length and is suitable for medium oil. There are lots of other choices, but most particle pearls handle more oil than the AMP, on average. Almost everyone has easily adjustable coverstocks if you can do that or have that done.   SOme come dull like the Threshodl, Sniper, RS-P, Some come with a mild polish; some come highly polished, like the Enriched Uranium, Ambush, Pyro.

Thanks for the info...So if the AMP had a low RG and high diff, and the DA also has a low RG and high diff (almost same specs), would putting a coat of polish on it help?  Or would getting the U-turn PP and getting a label drill be better? Please know I have slower speed w/high revs.

Can someone explain exactly the reaction a label drilling gives? Cuz my AMP was pretty strong, stronger than my S&A w/sharp breakpoint drilling and my Venom, with pin up and cg kicked way out. I don't wanna redrill my Venom, b/c it would be for the 2nd time, but if it will give me the reaction I want, I will. Does a 2nd plug and redrill hurt?

Typical label drilling is pin at 1:30 in relation to CG. CG being on the grip center line usually at the center of grip, but not always. For most bowlers, this puts the pin close to the leverage position - which creates max flare. Reaction is large hook, moderate length and good backend. In general, the drilling promotes skid thru the front, begins to arc in late mids and hard arcs in the back. It lessens effects of over / under and is the most versatile of all drills.

What else I can tell you is that I have a Venom drilled pretty much label and I am not high rev / low speed. I works pretty well for me, except for on light to dry. The ball needs to skid for awhile to retain much energy for the pins. On light / dry, the ball doesn't hook much for me and just goes into a strong forward roll. I think this is pretty typical for particle balls. Of course, much has to do with your axis of rotation and axis tilt. I think if you can control both somewhat, then the Venom drilled label should cover just about everything medium. I think drilling again [a third time] is throwing good money after bad. If it doesn't work out, you can never be sure the effect of turning the core into swiss cheese.
