Need help with Layout
« on: December 31, 2007, 01:17:28 AM »
I have a choice of specs on two Hawg Wilds.  I tend to have better stronger reactions with balls that have higher top weights.  However, I thought I read somewhere that shorter pins with higher tops tend to lope down the lane.  The ball I think I'm going to choose is 1-2inch pin and 3.5oz of top.  I figure I will put the pin below my ring and stack the cg below.  My other option is 2-3inch pin and 2.75oz of top.  With the lower top weight, I thought I might get a better reaction out of the first one.  Any ideas?

What I see by your profile is that you are a high track player but your ball speed is slightly below average.  I think that if your ball speed was more in the 17-18 range, you would see a difference in your overall ball reaction. Higher track means that you promote earlier roll in the midlane already.  If you were a lower track person, you can get the ball to push down the lane easier. You are already going to create flare so what you may be seeing, is that the ball may be revving up early and then dying on the backend.  I dont really think top weight is the issue.  As a high track player myself, I usually tend to put my pins up above the fingers and then shift the pin left (if I want alot of length), or kick it right towards my PAP (if I want the ball to read a little quicker and smoothen out the backend).

First of all, what kind of lane condition are you bowling on and what exactly do you want the ball to do?

I bowl on a decent amount of oil to start and it breaks down rapidly in the 2nd game.  I have a pin up Momentum that works great about midway through the 2nd game and to the finish but dings a lot of 10 pins at the beginning because it gets too far down the lane.  I'm looking for something more aggressive that will start up sooner to create the right angle to start off on the oilier lane.  I think I may get the higher top Hawg Wild and stack it with a probable weight hole.  What do you think?

Here is what I would do.  If you like the roll of the Momentum but worried about to many corners from too much length, then do a drilling similar to the Momentum.  BUT...have a dull surface for a little more and earlier bite in the oil.  Just having a little more surface to the ball should start the midlane read early enough to help kick out those pesky corner pins.  Usually when playing up the boards, a simple surface change will do wonders for carry.

What you do, is use the duller surface on the fresh oil shot.  Once the shot breaks down a little and lane starts to transition, break out the Momentum and open up a touch.  Since they say that surface is 70% of ball reaction, go with a similar drilling.  Just keep the surface without polish and you should be fine.
