I have been playing with the pitches in my thumb for about a year now. I feel like I am getting close to that "perfect" feel, but sometimes the ball comes off my thumb just a little too early resulting in much less rotation and a flat shot. I am trying to have the most relaxed grip possible. I went from 3/4 reverse 3/4 under to 1/4 reverse 1/8 under. 4.5" span both with tight holes. The original pitch resulted in more rotation but more grip pressure and muscling, the latter less muscle but less rotation. My question is should I keep the 1/4 reverse and add more under palm pitch? i tried the coke can test and my thumb points towards my ring finger.

It is more the position of your wrist, it is what supports the ball. If it gets to a point where you are decelerating to release the ball, you are defeating the effect. Too much towards the palm, in the fingers or thumb creates a deceleration to allow the digits to release. You have to create the proper angles to allow the bowling ball to release at the correct position in the approach.

I have always been good at adjusting using wrist positions, I would rather adjust wrist position than move. I wish i could get the easy revs that I had with the the original pitches with the relaxed fit the new pitches give. Looking at the charts it seems the reverse of 1/4 for a 4.5" span with tight flexibility is on par, thus why I was thinking of more positive lateral like I had before. BTW thumb is 2.5" long if that matters.

Any angles towards the palm creates excess rotation before the thumb releases from the bowling ball. Reverse dictates grip pressure as well if the thumb is exiting too quick. I would SERIOUSLY suggest making adjustments in moderation. Leave the lateral and cut the reverse an 1/8".

Thanks. I will re-slug a ball I don't use and try less reverse and go from there. I know I can't go any shorter on the span, so I hope going less reverse doesn't mean I would need to shorten it.

You can go too short with the span which create issues...
