Need new ball layouts?
« on: July 05, 2004, 07:41:38 PM »
Hey guys.  I've been bowling with around a 200 average for a while now, but I've been having trouble with my balls lately, plus I've just always felt like something didn't feel right with them.  I stand on the 17 board and throw at the 13 board on the lane.  Right now I have a TiMessenger gold/black and a red/black wicked.  I had the wicked first and bought the messenger afterwards and it helped me out a lot.  I don't have a whole lot of money right now so I can't just go and buy new balls all the time.  I was thinking that I might be able to re-drill them.  Right now I have the problem that my tracks always run over my finger holes on my messenger.  Usually either right over the middle finger hole or between them both.  I took pictures of them as I don't know what position my stuff is at.  Here are the links to see my balls and how they are drilled.  The problem with my wicked is that it usually hits soft leaving many 10 pins on pocket shots and such.  I think that means its losing energy towards the pocket and rolling out right?  It's not a good heavy oil ball either though so i don't understand why it'd do that.

Go to http://www.geocities.com/danagar21/ball1.jpg make sure you copy that to your browser adress bar because if you click it it won't bring it up, geocities doesn't allow outside hosting And http://www.geocities.com/danagar21/ball2.jpg

Looking at the pictures I would guess that you hit the finger holes more on the messenger than the wicked...if you even hit the wicked at all.  Reason for this is the distance that your pin is below your fingers.  The lower the pin the more of a chance that a person has of tracking over their fingers.  Now it also depends on your release / axis point...but without knowing these facts it's hard to say exactly what the fix is.

About the wicked not hit so hard, etc.  Both of your balls are drilled "label" and in general this will not be a hard finishing drilling so depending on the condition, the part of the lane you are playing and your release...it's very possible to leave flat 10's with this kind of drilling.  If you want the ball to flip harder you could try a drilling with the pin above your finger line and but the CG / Mass Bias in a stronger position.  Really I would talk to your driller about your concerns with your current equipment and see what he/she recommends.  If you driller doesn't seem like they want to help out...find another one!

Yeah I'm gonna go in today and talk to them about it.  The guy who drilled my wicked is no longer here and I'm going to be going to someone totally new this time so I'll have to figure it out then I guess.

What is a very high tracker?

Is there any way I can tell you my release or axis over this? Or would you have to come watch me since I don't really know how to describe it in terms you could maybe help me with.

This is how i throw my ball, I usually have a high back swing, i have a high rev rate, usually end up replacing finger grips after a few months because i rip them.  I like to throw the ball with some speed, but most of the balls I own require me to really slow down in some conditions, and then causes me to have more mistakes because my speed changes every shot instead of staying consistant like it would on my normal speed.  I'd say my track is about 30-40 degrees off a straight line drawn from my fingers to my thumb, usually the track runs over my finger holes. Actually I'm gonna go bowl real quick and see if i can get a shot of my tracks  Depends on how the oil is today.  Gotta love phone cameras

High track means the ball rolls very close to the fingers and thumb holes. If you are ripping grips, I think you need your span and grip checked. Grips should never rip, you must be really grabbing the ball. Do your fingers get sore when you bowl alot?

So if you track near your fingers, but your track "is about 30-40 degrees off a straight line drawn from my fingers to my thumb" that sounds like an inverted track.  An inverted track is where your first oil line on the ball is closer to the fingers than the thumb.

A high tracker is one in which the exact opposite happens and the track is usually pretty far away from the fingers.

While knowing your track and how your current drilling relate to your axis point, your driller does need to see your throw some shots as speed and other factors dictate ball choices, drilings selected and even surface adjustments.  Good luck with the new driller!

lol very funny portside.  Ok I just got back from bowling.  Here's what I discovered on further examination.  My track flares over my finger holes and thumb hole.  Thats right, it goes over both of them.  The spot where the flare lines all cross together is actually on the opposite side of the ball.  When I went in this early there wasn't a pro shop guy there so I'm gonna go back later today when he's there and talk to him and have him see what i'm doing.

Oh and just FYI, when i throw my wicked it runs over the finger holes, just not the thumbhole if I remember right.
