Need some advice - Right handed layout but I am a lefty
« on: September 13, 2013, 11:22:58 AM »
I am a rev dominate lefty with medium speed at best.  Don't have stats to give but have a 5 over PAP, high track and have to throw mild equipment or urethane/plastic on most THS due to my rev rate and lack of speed.

I tried drilling the "do not drill" layout on a mission and for me, it hooks just fine on medium conditions.

However, on occasion when I encounter a higher volume longer pattern, the mission is too squirmy.  If I hit it full tilt, it is too snappy on the back-end to control, and if I back off any it won't respond.

So, just received a free visionary warlock XV, which is one of their aggressive cores and cover-stocks.  A buddy has one that he drilled in a standard pin over ring layout and I can throw his stuff.  It got good length but at the transition point, it simply made a right turn.  So his layout is not what I want.

What I am considering is a full 6 or 6 3/4 pin to PAP layout that in essence makes it a right handed layout.  I am hoping to keep the length but by going to that extreme pin length, calm down the back end transition so that it won't just jump right on the friction.

Will this idea work?

Thanks for the input in advance.

I hate to nitpick, but there is no such thing as a right handed or left handed layout.

A pin in the track will smooth things out, and if the Warlock has a dull surface, it will not be snappy off the dry. Another option is to go the opposite way, and go pin on axis. It will lay the core down, and reduce flare. Only problem would be if too early with your low ball speed.

To answer your question....YES......it will work. You will get more length for sure. If your surface is shiny, you will still get a small snap on the backend. As Impending Doom said if your surface is dull, it will smooth things out, and not be snappy.

I have a couple of balls drilled pin axis. I love the reaction but I have to be a sharp shooter to get consistent carry. I too, am rev dominant.

pin on pap does not carry for many but 2 inches from pin to pap does in many situations and for many rev rates.  Also pin on PAP with a 9 inch from grip center weighthole is a big improvement.

I had a 2 inch pin to PAP that I put on a Pro Zone Azure cg back towards grip and that thing was lovely.   Till it was stolen!  Only ball I've ever had stolen!

Of course that thing was lovely with a 4 1/2 pin to PAP with surface on heavy oil until I redrilled it also!

On the subject of lefty drilling for a righty.  I believe that Richie of Lane 1 was a big believer in lefty leverage drilled balls for righties on heavy oil.  The idea was that the ball would do little  The idea was that one would not aim far away from the pocket, as a decent heavy oil bowler after playing in tournies for years with the usual FTL condition out, I agree with this theory.  Of course I use high rg balls that allow me to point up towards the pocket.  The Track spell is my favorite for this.  Of course I use this ball on league medium heavy also and swing it a good bit!  Same ball on heavy flat oil I play often 5 to 9 arrows to break point.  Yumm!

I think Richie as usual is dead on!  Though I have never tried it myself!

Only problem with that long of a pin is that it's going to affect your continuation.  The closer to 6 3/4 you get, the flatter the ball is going to roll, or more of a hook/set type reaction.  I might almost go bigger on the angles, and do something like 85x5x60.  This will get the length you're after and the tame move on the backend, still with a long pin, but not one so long that you start to lose axis rotation or risk the ball rolling out.  Like LuckyLefty said, yeah, you'll get a smooth reaction, but it's going to be really soft at the pocket.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

If you are rev dominate this is not the layout for you. Do not go over 6 or 6.25"

What you will find is that at this pin to pap the ball will have plenty of hook but down lane will be extremely strong. When the ball finally flips it will flip a lot. You can stand in and hook the ball as much as most other bowling balls. I am not rev dominant and with 6-6.25" pin to paps can use the ball on any conditions. Plenty of length, but down lane is very very strong.

The ball design and the surface will be the more important factor for calming down the reaction to frication down lane.
