Need suggestions
« on: November 26, 2016, 08:11:33 AM »
I am a senior PBA member(57 yrs old) with a 380-400 rev rate(CATS), 15 DEG axis tilt, 15.5-16 mph PAP 5'over 1" down(inverted). I am looking to exploit house and shorter sport patterns by using straighter angles through front part of lane. My strong release and lack of speed makes me have to open up angles even on fresh. I have urethane, which helps on some patterns, but am looking for some layout/cover options that will allow me to straighten my angles through the fronts and not have to kill my release. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try going with a 2" pin to pap with a small weight hole down your VAL on a weaker ball. Should help in trying to play straighter angles.

If the oil isn't there or on short patterns plastic with a little surface works really well.

Most options will depend on the amount of oil up front and the amount of friction on the gutters. For right handers there usually isn't much oil for trying to play say 2nd arrow or further right due to large amounts of friction. You have to play what area the lane gives you.

Understood...the lack of volume is the reason I asked the question. Lower rev rates and higher ball speeds are having a field day because the patterns are favoring straighter angles through the front part of the lane. I find myself always left(at least an arrow)of the majority. Would prefer to use reactive options. Thanks for your response. Anybody else? Charlest...what do you think?

Also because of my lower ball speed, and higher rev rate (not as high as yours, I believe), I tend to use either balls that have a smaller, controlled backend, or longer pin-PAP distances (5.5" - 6"). I have tried short pins like 1.5" - 2.5", but since another main effect of this is to make the ball go into a roll earlier, I have not been successful with this method of attack. BUT, my ball speed is also lower than yours, if yours is at the backend.. If your ball speed is at the arrows, then you might try the 2" pin on one used ball as a test.

Recently, I have been successful on lanes that are on the lighter side, with balls such as the DV8 Outcast, the B'wick Fanatic BTU, Storm Tropical Breeze (now Trop. Storm) Hybrid and the slightly stronger Storm Ride (also a hybrid). Some of these balls already have very low RG differentials; so be aware that short or long pin-PAP distance can make them sensitive to carrydown.

Also several of theses balls I have sanded to 4000 grit OR a full 5-6000 grit (using 3M Trizact pads) and then gloss polished. This process can help reduce hook and backend.

Additionally there are polishes, like Valentino UFO, Neo-Tac Control-It and Powerhouse Delayed Reaction that contain what is termed "slip agents". These not only polish the ball, but they also clog the pore and reduce the coverstock's ability to absorb oil. The result is less hook and, more importantly less backend, for much more control.

I'd like to add that there is one almost special resin/urethane blend out there, the Hammer Blue Hammer, that seems especially good for lower ball speed bowlers.  It is milder than any resin I have tried in a long time; yet its backend, while controlled, is still stronger than most true urethanes. (It is marketed as a urethane but it must be a blend, due to the ease with which it is sanded and polished and the ease with which it gets down the lane even at 2000 or 300 grit dull. It needs a ton of dry to make the turn and most often you can really play on top of the oil line. Of course, all this makes it very susceptible to carrydown.

It also has a very low RG differential; so you can/should drill it as strong as you like.

Great feedback...I see we have similar issues. My speed is at the end of the pattern and doesn't vary much between 15.5 and 16mph. My inverted track seems to be an issue because stronger stuff wants to read sooner and weaker stuff wants to go 60 feet. If higher grits + polish is an option that will accomplish the goal, I will try this today. Are there any suggested layouts for what I'm trying to do?

Although the speed gun may of, that speed at the pins is pretty darn good. Kind of surprised you're having the problems you are. While I can vary my rev rate from 250 -400, roughly, I try to keep it to the 275-300 range, so as not to be too rev dominant.

The inverted track  tends to make the ball rev early also, making it slightly harder to get good length. I used to have an inverted also, but I've managed to get it to the point where, for the most part, it's equidistant from thumb and fingers.

Layouts are hard to gauge; they depend a lot on the ball, the friction (lane surface + oil) and the bowler. Try a 5.5" pin-PAP with a larger than average (for you) VAL angle. If you use 35-40 degrees, try 55-60 degrees. Drill angle makes little difference because most weak balls are symmetric and the MB/PSA winds up near the thumb hole.
