Need weak layouts for aggressive balls.
« on: October 28, 2004, 01:20:39 AM »
What weak layouts would be best for aggressive balls? I never liked label leverage at all, too long for my speed & gets too snappy on backends.I need some midlane turn, but not too snappy.
Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help...

My suggestion would be 12:00, pin 2 inches above your fingers, make sure to measure statics and punch a hole where needed.  I would think that this would work better with a longer pin, i'm trying this layout on an EMB XF with a 4" pin, polished REAL shiny.  Hopefully this will give me a weak reaction for the toast!

Pin 4 1/2-5 1/2" from PAP and MB @ 0-45° (length pin placement with arc/forward roll MB placement)
or
Pin 1.5-2.5" from PAP and MB @ 90-120° (early roll pin placement with control MB placement)

These are suggestions that would work for the "average" bowler that may or may not for you depending on your style/specs and lane conditions which I know nothing about.

You could just dull the surface of given ball to create more midlane and smoother overall hook, ball surface has a bigger affect on ball reaction than the drilling after all.

I have tried a couple "alternative" right-handed layouts in the past 6 months.  The first one was a 180° layout with a solid carbide buzzsaw.  This placed the pin under the ring finger and cg left of the middle finger, in my track.  A weight hole was required above and left of my middle finger, just past the flare "bowtie" so as not to flare over the hole.  The ball would clear the heads fairly easily, and give a strong mid-lane read.  The backend was then fairly mild.

The other layout I have used is the 315°.  This puts the pin somewhere near your middle finger and the cg is above and right of your middle finger...  weight hole in that area as well.  This layout is very nice for a hook-set reaction... seems to be insensitive (at least somewhat) to small release variations.  Works best for me when you really need to control the backends...

you can check out some more info on these here:

I've done weak drillings for two really strong balls before and like the reactions I get from them.

My WarpZone has the pin under the bridge with the MB kicked out to be in line with my vertical axis line (about 4" below it). This gives me a really clean ball roll and it lets the aggressive nature of the coverstock to do the moving on the lanes.

This allows me to keep the coverstock pretty dull (about 1000 grit) and get an early read on the heavier oil patterns... and then set into the pocket for a clean reaction on heavily oiled lanes.

XXX, you could try a pin axis layout, but I think you may get too much length in the oil.

I would try placing the pin near the center of your grip/palm, with the CG kicked out straight across at 3:00 from the CG. You could also place the CG in the thumb quadrant, at a 4:30 position to the CG.

In either case, drilling an axis hole back to negative side weight will get the ball rolling even earlier in the midlane, with more arc/less snap on the backend. =:^D

Pin high over the ring, C.G under the middle.  I love this drill
