negative PAP weight hole questions

I was reading in another post about putting a weight hole in the negative PAP to remove excess negative side weight.  Has anyone done this successfully?  Did it throw the other statics out of legal?

My concerns with trying this are that the ball might flare over the weight hole and change the statics to where they would be out of legal specs.  

I assume you simply place the weight hole 180 degrees opposite the PAP, is this correct?

You can put the weight hole pretty much anywhere you like, so long as there's only one and the ending statics are legal.  How the ball flares does not affect statics (the converse is not necessarily true, though), it's not like the ball is legal when you put it on a scale but illegal going down the lane.  I've seen balls with holes on the NAP, mostly plastic balls that weren't quite drilled over the label.

To check whether the flare will hit the hole, put about 6 pieces of tape, on top of each other, where you want to put the hole and throw the ball.  If it doesn't hit the tape it probably won't hit the hole.  Regarding legality, you need to know the existing weights before you drill the hole.  Any good driller can estimate whether the hole you are considering will make the ball illegal.

You can put one balance hole anywhere in the ball you want so long as it doesn't make the ball weights illegal.  --  JohnP

I used a weight one on the "negative" (although I hate to use that term..) side of the ball before.  I drilled up a ball with a 135 degree layout for myself.  Before placing a weight hole in the ball, I took it out (as per instructions) and threw it to see where the ball tracked and were the bow-tie was located.  The weight hole was placed just past the bow-tie, where it wouldn't be rolled over.  It was a very nice layout for later tournament blocks when the head were gone...

I have a customer that had a ball he wasn't satisfied with.  He decided he wanted more positive side weight.  We picked a spot, tested it as I've described, and drilled the hole.  Weights were legal and as I best remember we ended up with about 3/4 oz of side wt.  When he threw it, I couldn't see any difference in the reaction, but he said he could and ,most importantly, was satisfied.  --  JohnP
