new ball drill
« on: October 08, 2004, 06:32:58 AM »
on my next ball I want to put the pin near my ring finger and the cg towards the grip.

I was wondering how far of a pin out I should get and how that would change ball reaction with this type of drilling. I was thinking about putting the pin either right next to my ring finger or right under my ring finger.

my goal for this ball is to be my main ball and have more of a skid/snap strong backend.

thanks
klep

Look at the web sites for the various ball companies,..pick out a drilling that they suggest for that ball, and your desired reaction,...most all real good.

How far from your PAP with that put the pin/CG and/or the Mass Bias?  Without knowing your PAP, any guesses about reaction is simply that a guess.  If you want skid/snap reaction, I believe that you want the CG/MB towards the VAL, not in the grip.  I believe that will give you more of an arcing reaction.
the highr the pin (in relation to the fingers) the more skid, putting it below the fingers will get you an earlier roll.

the drill you are talking about is a basic 4 x 5 (for most typical pap locations) with the mb toward the track,.. this tends to produce a medium length with and arcing backend,..For me I prefer at least a 3-4" pin,..this will always provide you and your driller with more variables in patterns, some like longer, some shorter,..depends on what you are looking for. Also the ball you select should be a ball designed for skid/flip,...the more vertical the weight block, ie; higher differential,..and or a ball that has a weight block with a flip block design will be better for your selection,...for me I want a ball that stores energy on the backs so it will have the pop to flip,..Pearls, and balls that will shine are best for me. Some balls that are advertised to be big hook balls,..are also early hook balls, and have a hard time getting the lenght and energy to skid/flip,...a good skid/flip drill for me is a 5 x 4 layout with the pin over the fingers,..with a 6" hole on the verticle span line to remove the side weight to below 1/2 oz..not all drills work for every one,..speed, revs, lanes,.etc..have to be considered...any more questions e-mail me at jim300_99@yahoo.com

klep -- jimensminger and cgilyeat have given you good advice even with several "pieces of the puzzle" missing.  For example, what's your span and are you willing to accept a balance hole?  Do you care if the finger holes are drilled near or into the pin (voiding the warranty on the ball)?  What's your PAP?  You haven't even entered a profile.  Without these and more pieces of information, jimensminger's original answer was absolutely the best he could give.  --  JohnP
