Opening up a thumb slug?
« on: March 21, 2010, 03:55:53 PM »
I don't use slugs on my equipment, but I picked up a used ball and the thumb slug is just a tiny bit too tight.  It actually matches my size, but my driller always needs to open up the holes just a tad because my crooked thumb hangs up on the hole.  This is a simple enough task when it just means fine tuning the thumb hole drilled into the ball, but can this be accomplished on a slug?

Thanks

Thumb slugs are just urethane. You can easily do it yourself. Get some double sided tape and a few sheets of sandpaper. I used to have 1-3/8" slugs installed with a 7/8" hole drilled then I would use strips of 80 or 120 grit sandpaper to rough out an oval shape, then use 220 to finish it off. It took a while, but I used to end up with a perfect fit 90% of the time. I finally got wise and had a mold made of my favorite ball and now I just make my own custom molded thumbholes. Anyway - point is you just cut a piece of sandpaper about 3/4" by 2 or 3" and then use a piece of double sided tape to hold it on your index finger then sand the hole where it needs to be sanded. When you get it just about right move to a smoother grit and finish it off.

I like to use the sheetrock/spackle screening of 120 and 220.  I use the 120 screen to get the area/thumb hole close, then I use the 220 to smooth out the thumb hole.
