For me, as I posted in the Black Ops pin down and pin up thread, I drill 2 of every ball, one with the pin above the fingers, cg in the palm, no extra hole, and another with the pin below the fingers, cg kicked out and down into the thumb quadrant, and an extra hole 6 inches from the pin through the cg in the thumb quadrant.
I track high to start and with the pin up ball I almost track over the fingers and thumb, and many times I will thump over one or both sets of holes with a pin under drill. By adding the 6 inch extra hole in the thumb quadrant, I kill a few birds with one stone...by adding the extra hole in the thumb quadrant, I am removing excess weight from the thumb when I kicked the cg into the thumb quadrant, I am removing extra weight from the left side of my ball (left handed) to make the ball static legal from side to side, and finally, adding the bowtie in this quadrant also lowers the bowtie off of my fingers and thumb.
For me, balls with pin under and the cg kicked with an extra hole will stand up quicker than a pin up ball with no extra hole.
Hope all that blabber made sense.
