Author Topic: Does anybody else get "roll out" with a 5 x 4 drilling? (Read 2596 times)

I've been getting a hook set, or roll out, reaction with this drilling on most balls I've tried with it in the past long while... PIN above ring and CG 1" right of grip line. I'm getting no continuation which leads to bad pin carry.

How can I get more continuation through the backend? Move the CG closer to grip center (say 1/4" or 1/2" right of grip) in stead of kicking it out to 1"?

Or kick the CG out farther past 1" to say like 1.5" or 2"?

I'm guessing the first one, moving it back closer to grip center???

I have slow speed, medium revs, 40-45 degrees axis rotation, medium axis tilt, and my PAP is 5 1/2" over and about 3/4" up.

Thoughts are appreciated!

If the CG is below the ML, pop a weighthole in the thumb posivitve quadrant. This should give you a little more continuation.

Dude your style sounds almost identical to mine except my PAP is inconsistent right now so I'm not sure on that. I'd like to read up on this...

The CG is about 1/4" above the midline.

Not sure if this may help you but I have had success with moving the pin under the fingers. Right between the ring and middle with the CG kicked out 2- 21/2 inches from my midline. MY PAP is 5 inches over 1/2 inch up. In comparison to balls with the pin under my ring or over the ring the layout I suggested goes a little longer with a more angular continuous backend. But again like addik stated, Lane condition and the ball type will play a big part.

Ric,
Our style is different, and your PAP is up higher than mine, over is pretty close, anyway..I have my CG just about 1/2-3/4" over from Grip center. I don't have a large swing and am down and in more than anything, but I have found, for me, this gives me a great backend, nice and long, and unless it's bone dry, the ball goes where I have thrown it. That's NOT to say I get that many strikes, but that's MY problem hitting my mark consistently, there in is my problem.
You might think about moving CG closer to GC and don't think about change, just throw as you would. I have found a lot of folks will over think a change and somehow compensate for that change and then complain when it didn't work for them.
Not much help, but there it is.

Or let me PHRASE it a little different. I've always been confused on this matter... which drilling causes better continuation: snap drilling's or archy drilling's?

So basically does a ball that snaps usually have better continuation or does a ball that rolls, or arcs smoothly, usually have better continuation?

If the 1st one, then that would be something like a 5" x 4" (with the imaginary Mass Bias 1/2" right of thumb)... but if the 2nd one, then that would be something like a 5" x 5 1/2" (with the imaginary Mass Bias 1/2" left of thumb) for a PAP of say 5 1/2 over and 3/4 up...

Confused.

Ric -- As tonx said, don't forget that ball surface plays a larger role than layout. If you want the ball to go longer and snap, sand it to a fine (~2000 ) grit and polish it. If you want it to move earlier and arc, sand it with a coarser (~600) grit and leave unpolished. -- JohnP

Ball surface, INDEED, plays a larger roll, as does ball speed and bowler's axis tilt. All play a larger roll than the drilling. AND all come into play as they interact with the oil amount, lenth AND the lane's surface

I think you need to reconsider your original question, in light of the above factors AND their inter-relationship!!!

Drilling is the last factor to consider, except in an asymmetric core, which further complicates the issue.
