OK guys I am at wits end here. I have a bowler with above average speed and above average revs. He wants a ball for oil.
I have drilled him a pin under ring, cg out Full Throttle and that wasn't enough.
Then drilled him a Total Shock & Awe max hook on Mo's sheet and that's not enough.
I need some help here. It seems that hem loves every ball he gets for about 3-4 weeks and then suddenly it's "dead" as he puts it.
Suggestions for a ball and layout? He has loads of talent but refuses to move and adjust. Just wants a ball that turns harder and hooks more when he can't get to the pocket.
Help?

If he has above avg. speed and revs I find it strange that he can't get the ball too hook. Is it because the lanes are that heavy or am I missing something here?
-
This is a tough question to answer because there not enough info about the guy and the conditions.
Tracks GP2 is great for heavy oil and is also a great ball for crankers. If he can't hook that ball in oil then he doesn't have many revs or way too much speed for his revs.

If the Total Shock and Awe isn't enough, then he needs to learn how to bowl, that thing hooks early.
The only thing I can suggest is a Tsunami and hear me out, the ball probably isn't encountering oil if the TS&A isn't moving, it is probably burning out. If this guy gets a ton of hand in the ball and wants something that will hook, this ball will snap a ton.
If it doesn't work, the Tsunami still is enough money to make it worth the headache on your part Doug.
-
the balls he has might be to much. If his rev rate is super high with medium balls speed. he may need something like a Storm Super Sport solid with a stronger drilling or take the TSA and give it a super symetric layout.

FWIW I'm inclined to agree with CoachJim and NextLevel: have you watched him bowl in league? Does he really know what he's doing? (You haven't indicated that.)
If he's bowling 3-4 time per week on TRUE heavy oil, all oil balls do absorb oil and lose reaction at different rates; he could be on REALLY heavy oil and they could be just sucking up the oil, if he doesn't wipe them down every shot and clean them after each session. But that seems unlikely, but not impossible, in just 3-4 weeks.
Have you examined these balls that no longer work? are they polished by oil? Have you tried to extract the oil by some method: rejuvenator, hot water, Hook Again, CPR?

I have faith that Doug knows what he's doing. I'd put him in a Super Carbide Bomb with a 4 x 4 layout, if it won't hook in oil nothing will. But if he tries to use it in anything less than a flood, it's probably going to burn out. -- JohnP

Well guys he is a quality bowler but he does suffer from "modern bowling-itis"...also known as "I want to see the ball hook a tonnis"
In his words he's sick of "getting beat by equipment." Wants a ball to play his A game in the soup. I know it is unrealistic to throw 15 to 5 on heavy oil but I am hoping to locate somehting that will work better than what he has,...

You thought wrong my friend, there is not a ball on the market that will let someone play a breakpoint of 5 on soup and carry with any sort of efficiency. You just cannot play a line with a breakpoint that far out and expect to have a whole lot of success (if it is true soup) unless it is really their day. Somehow, you've gotta convince this guy to move in and tighten up.

As far as just trying to solve his problem with a ball, he might want to check out a Dyno-Thane Centrifugal Mass... nice strong heavy oil ball + Soaker coverstocks don't die like most other equipment.

He isn't getting beat by equipment if hes trying to play 15 to 5 on the soup.

Take the S&A Down to 220 / 80 and tell him throw faster!!!

Honestly I got a lot of balls. No NOT BOWLING BALLS! Bowling with 99.99% Luck and 0.01 % skill!!

Well guys...
1. very few bowlers have the hand/speed combination he does so it's tough to make comparisons
2. it is well known that he needs to soften the hand to get the ball to "stop spinning it's wheels" so to speak and back down the speed
3. The SCB is an option but again I think it's going to flare around the ball and leave him lots of nasty stuff unless I tame the drilling BUT he WANTS a "ball that will hook on anything."
Here's how I see it...
1. he needs to play the backend, not the oil. Get the ball thru the oil and find the ball/ line combo to get to the pocket
2. there are very few times when the lanes are oiled to the pins....so why the big hooking ball when you can GENERATE backend reaction?
I'll simply drill him a max leverage ball and then play with the surface.
Suggestions on balls other than the SCB? I suggested the AMB Particle but he doesn't want to "mess with the small companies."
Any others besides the Columbia Action?

i would suggest he spends his money hiring a good quality coach...he has to be able to play different areas of the lane, and unless you have the rev rate of robert smith or rudy revs, then the down and in game is the way to go..tighten up the shot....

I'd say a Strike Zone with a 2-2.5" pin 3-3.5oz top.
Pin at 4.5" under ring finger...
PSA placement will take a bit of measuring, but place it halfway between his VAL and track...
Bring to .5oz side, standard X-Hole placement of grip center through cg to VAL. Shouldn't take too big of a hole.
Start with box, tune to 1000 abralon if it doesnt backend enough.
Reasoning-
A strike zone will provide traction and hook with control of a breakpoint where most of the reaction will come off the end of the oil.
Low 4.5" pin will provide roll but clear the heads nicely.
PSA placement will afford a strong reaction once friction is encountered.
800 may be checking early, 1000 will push the reaction back a touch, if needed rough buff it.
Just my 2cp...
P.S. How are things down there at Owego Bowl Doug, been a while sir!

Does he consider Dynothane a small company?
As I said before, I think a Centrifugal Mass would do wonders...also just got Pure Energy Drilled today, and the thing is a monster...
Both balls would probably be good options

but Lane#1 is also a small company!

maybe rev leverage would get him an even earlier roll with tons of flare.

but the Action is not nearly as strong as many particle balls.
The Hawg is also kind of strong and early.
400 grit Strike Zone,
XXXcel is also strong, but
the SCB and the new AMB particle are as early and big hooking as they get.
On a personal note, Doug, my feeling is that, given this guy's personal "situation", this seems to have become a lose-lose proposition for you. I urge caution.

Doug,
I'm selling a ball for a friend on eBay (XXXcel).
He is in the same boat as your customer.
He flares the whole ball when he gets on the ball.
He has been trying to solve this problem since I met him.
That was in 1996. He buys a new ball every 2-6 weeks.
Playing the twig for him is the 10 board.
He shot his first PBA regional at 16 and finished 2nd or 3rd.
He had a lot of talent.
He won't play what the lane gives him...he is stoill looking for "the ball".
He has had a Track Arsenal Reaction for 3-4 weeks....It stopped hooking.
He's now looking at the new Hammer equipment, I think he mentioned a "Road Hawg", or the Ebonite Big One...He has gone through msot drillers in Chicago.
He's a loosing situation for a ball driller.
Don't know if your guy is the same or not. Looking for the "Magic" ball?

I know it's easy for me to say but, I'd refuse to sell him another ball until he learns to "bowl". I remember going through that same sort of thing. But, my cranky ol' pro-shop guy (God rest his soul) refused to drill me up a ball with built in hook. He told me I was more than welcome to join him for his Wednesday evening Practice session to learn how to make the adjustments. I certainly don't regret listening to his advice.
