Opinion please - Is redrilling a ball worth it?
« on: January 27, 2020, 07:52:52 AM »
Just curious in both a specific case and general question...

Left handed, PAP currently 4-1/2 x 1 up...

I'm thinking of redrilling my Statement Solid with pin up currently 1.25 inches above ring and MB in thumb, (which is a very lazy drilling for me) to be the same drill as my Sure Lock, which is pin down right below ring with MB swung out 45. The Sure Lock has  re-earned a spot in the bag after having been pulled out and (on in my current house) shapes and reacts well.

For this specific case, is this a standard pin up/pin down question and does the change from pin up to pin down create that big a difference? Videos on Google say possibly no with a low rev game.

In general though, there's a second question. A second drill removes most of the ball's remaining value. What percentage of people nowadays attempt a second drill instead of selling and trying again?

A lot of people do it with a lot of success, but I've never liked it personally.  Chances of cracking increase, BUT if you're redrilling one of your own balls and know that the plug work is going to be done well, I wouldn't worry about it too much.  The information alone might be worth it even if it doesn't work out.  I'd say give it a shot.  After the ball is drilled ONCE the value goes way down anyway.

Pin up vs pin down isn't a huge difference on symmetrical stuff, but could be a lot bigger difference on asyms depending on where the mass bias is at.

Thanks Luke. I particularly agree with your point on the information being worth it, particularly for someone like me who has had not-so-good luck with asyms. I would now have a known ball, surface condition, previous reaction, and throwing it in the same house. That information is probably worth it by itself.

The one thing I am worried about is that the MB is in the thumb of the ball, and my pin down drill to be copied has the MB at 45 degrees... Thoughts on impact or doing the comparison with a previously drilled out MB?

ÃŽ agree with Luke: do not worry about the ball's value - once you punch it up, it's a dead investment. If you are familiar with an older piece of yours, a re-drill is IMHO a good opportunity to learn more about the ball, and how the layout changes its reaction.

The MB position should IMHO not be a problem - after all, it's just a marking for the core's primary rotational axis, not a vital element of the ball itself. A good ball driller will, after plugging weigh and measure the ball anew before a new layout is applied. If there's an MB shift, this should be taken into account.

Personally, I never had problems with plugged and re-drilled balls - cracking occured, yes, but mostly on thin-shelled, new equipment, and so far never on plugged ones.

I'd go for the experiment, when you already have an idea about the reaction you want from the ball in the future.

Redrill the ball. Even a single drill ball isn't worth the cost of shipping it. There are a few cases where this rule doesn't hold true, but in general a used ball has little value.

Save your time and money.  I can't ever remember plugging a ball that didn't roll good, redrilling it, and then saying to myself I may have been wrong about this ball.  In my experience, unless it is a ball that was some kind of experiment, balls either roll good for you or they don't.

And this goes for drilling multiples of the same ball.  I can't tell you how many times I drilled 2 or 3 or 4 of something because it "looks great and has to roll better than it does",  or "it rolls good for everyone else..."

What I bolded above sums it up for me. I've plugged and re-drilled several balls (asymmetric and symmetric) that didn't initially roll good for me, and no bueno. Whatever improvement I saw was minimal and ultimately wasn't worth the time and expense.

If a ball is initially a turkey for you, chalk it up to experience and move on.

+1 on not bothering with a re-drill.  Only time it has ever made much difference for me is when I was farting around with a reverse flare drill that ended basically being 60' of skid for me.
Here today.  Gone tomorrow.

Try changing the surface first.  I adjust the surface of almost every second ball I drill to fine tune its reaction to my game

And I guess I'm always the oddball. I've re-drilled balls three times at one point, to eventually find that sweet spot!

Only PBA bowlers have that loose change and disposable income to constantly buy multiple balls. I redrill until I get it right!

The standard leverage drillings you see most people have is not for everyone! I will attest to that. Sometimes you have a gem, but you won't know it till you drill it right!

I hated early in my bowling career, giving up on a ball and selling it to another guy, only to see them put up honor scores with it! The difference was the person and usually the drilling that they used!
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

Agreed. Layouts are a small factor in ball motion. I would try some different surfaces first and then move on.

Interesting that several would mention surface. I don't know about you, but that's always the FIRST (and second, and third) thing that I do, and I suspect most other people as well.... Consider surface managed....
