How to drill a router sheild?
« on: September 12, 2006, 06:48:38 AM »
Guys,

Any advice on drilling the holes to attach a router sheild to the router?  I beleive the bit size is about 3/8.  It cracked the second it started.  Tried using a pilot hole, not much more luck.  Is there a specific type of bit used for drilling plastic?  Thanks guys!

Was the drill bit sharp?
Maybe you weren't supporting the shield enough so it flexed too much.
I've worked with lexan in the past and never had a problem like that.

Yes, they were sharp.  Fairly new Dewalt bits.  I don't think it flexed at all to be honest, but thanks for the input!

Sharp bits and slow speed always worked for me.

Put masking tape on both sides and use very high speed and very low pressure on the drillbit. It'll look like a factory job.

Thanks for all of the good advise.  What does the masking tape do though?

It will stop the surface from chipping. And a high speed will deter the bit from grabbing and forcing it's way into the hole before it is drilled. I drill plexi all the time and have never failed with this method.

I marked mine, laid it upside down on a 2X4 and drilled it that way. If you do not support the plastic, it will crack. As said above, slow..sharp bits.
