Encountered this thumbhole shape...and liked
« on: January 14, 2006, 11:33:41 PM »
I have an oval thumb but also a lot of taper from front to back.

I have tended to take tapers and take out the side taper.  Some good results.

A couple of days ago I picked a ball off the YABA shelf and purchased it as I loved the reaction.  The fit was not bad either.

What really intrigued me was the thumb shape and fit.

Guy had drilled down the main shaft of the hole 29/32.  This went from about 3/4 an inch from top of ball all the way down to bottom of hole.  Now the top of the hole measured about 31/32.  From the top of the hole down to the 3/4 inch deep mark the hole just evenly tapered.  VEry little bevel!

The ball even with a 3/16 of an inch narrower span held on my hand GREAT! AND seemed to give some latitude as to pitches to stay on till whenever I wanted to release even though the setup if I had used the same pitches on my previous thumbs would have tended to get off fast.

How do you think the guy did this?  Bevel sander mostly below the lip of ball?
Heavy handed bevel knife? A series of successively larger drill bits followed by the bevel sander?

Any of our drill gurus seen this before?

I've found out whose ball it is and was going to try to find out....But I thought I'd start with our experts here.

Might have used a tapered reamer. Expensive bits and usually morse only.

T-God has talked about tapered thumb holes at one time or another. Check with him.

Sounds to me like a thumb hole for someone who has a "coned" thumb, considerably larger at the base than at the knuckle.  To fit these people, I drill the hole to fit the knuckle area of the thumb, then use the bevel sander to enlarge the top portion to fit the base of the thumb.  --  JohnP

If i remember correctly you like the thumb i had in the Silver Streak you bought. I too have a cone thumb and have gone to drilling 29/32 and then beveling the top 1/2-3/4" to match thumb shape so no hang-up occurs. Mines even a bit more odd shaped as it isn't very flexibile at knuckle so it looks more like a triangle.

This is just a tapered thumb it is not hard to do. if you have an oval thumb you make your oval cuts, then divide inhalf your cuts so you are centered over the hole, then measure with your bt ball fitter the very base of the thumb around the knuckle. use that drill bit size, then go two bits smaller each time until you get to your original size. each time you go about 1/16 down. once you are done, just use your bevel sander and the cuts will be sanded away. this way you never have to touch a bevel knife.

this is useful for people with thumbs that get hung up on the front side of the knuckle. you can push the thumb in as far as you want to and it will not have any pressure on the top each of the thumb. occasionally if the the taper is too far down or too large you might experience pain in the muslce tissue just below the thumb.

if a person tries this and finds they loose the ball it is because they have a tendance to hold on to the ball with the base of there thumb.
