pads of fingers refuse to touch grips
« on: February 25, 2011, 05:49:25 AM »
   Hello everybody,

I am having big problems with my grip. I think it is attributed to a loss of flexibility in my hand.

I have always been a 4 5/8 span (total, not to cut) and would use 1/4" reverse in the fingers.

The pads of my fingers do not bend sufficiently to touch the holes. In other words the only part of my fingers that touch the grip are the nail side. My ring finger is getting a burn mark on the pad and I noticed that if I try to come around the ball that finger has a tendency to prematurely come out of the hole.

One knowledgeable fellow said my span was an 1/8" short and wanted me to try 5/8" reverse pitch in the fingers. I did and it felt awful. I don't think it matters how much reverse I go with in the fingers at this point.

My static fit would indicate that everything is ok, but when my hand is in the ball it feels awful. I think I need a shorter span than what would be required due to my lack of flexibility.

Has anyone else had this problem, what did you do? or for you shop gurus what would you recommend I try?

Thanks and have a great day!

Darren, you're a young man. How can you loose so much flexability in your hand?

It sounds like your grip is too long, not short. Have you changed drillers or made any changes on your drill sheet recently.

Maybe pull out a comfortable old ball from 2-3 years ago and see if you're still having problems with your grip. If not,the flexability problem may be something medical since you're so young. You shouldn't be having that type of problem.

3 holes of fun!!

Static fit is irrelevant to release or swing fit....so I would adjust it shorter, as the previous poster stated and get the span closer to correct and then adjust the pitches.

It definitely sounds like your span is way too long and the pitches are off as well. If you go to bowlingchat.net, do the work required by the fitting wiki and then post in the drilling and layout forum under Mo and friends, Mo can help you. I did this and he found my span was too long and the pitches were all wrong. The new layout he gave me fit 100% better.

Does your hand feel stretched?  If not, shortening your span will be more of a bother than a help.  What are your horizontal finger pitches?  Do you use lipped grips?

Before going through and changing spans on your equipment, ask your driller to plug your finger holes in a ball you no longer use and change your finger pitches 1/4" more reverse than you have.  Also if you are using a lipped grip, go to a non lipped grip.  You will feel an immediate difference and may pick up some revs.  If this is not enough help and still cannot feel the pads of your fngers on the grips, then shorten your span in 1/8" increments (NO MORE! THAN THAT).

If you re-read, he tried more away in the fingers and as he said, if felt awful.

He needs to adjust the span to get it so his fingers are closer to be seated in the gripping holes, then adjust the finger pitches.

Just Rico,

I took one of my older balls that I used a lot last year. As it turns out the spans are an 1/8 shorter on each finger.

The pitches in the fingers are the same that I am using now, which is 1/4 reverse.

I don't know why I switched. The gentleman I work with in the shop mentioned my span was a little short so we tweaked it, but it doesn't work for me.

I was able to keep the pads of my fingers against the holes all 6 games of practice today with no pain.

Thanks for taking the time to reply back everybody, I appreciate it.
