Knowing your PAP allows you to be able to tailor a balls reaction specifically to your game.  It is the most sure fire way to get the most out of the ball you purchase.  If you have a knowledgeable ball driller, who knows your game and has your PAP measurement to use, it aids him/her to customize any ball you want, and get it to react the way you expect it to.  That is the simplified explanation.

Very important,
You could lay the ball out by looking at the sheet each ball comes with.  But if you read what it says, all the measurements are based off of your PAP.  There use to be a guy in my area that would look at this ball sheet and copy the picture, the layout could have called for 4" pin to pap and the diagram used a pap of 4-1/2" and 0.  If you're a low tracker that pin could be close to or on your pap.  Or for a high tracker it could be close to 2-3" from pap.  This makes a big difference when you're looking for a certain ball reaction.  Although layout only makes up 15-20% of total ball reaction, it's still a BIG deal.

How much importance the PAP plays in a layout also depends on the skill of the bowler.  For highly skilled players that can duplicate their release time after time, yes the pin to PAP and pin to MB (for asymmetric balls) distances are very important.  For the less skilled who come straight up the back of the ball one time and spin it the next, these distances have little importance.  In fact for this type of player I recommend the Tornados, Power Grooves, etc. that have weak cores, until their skills improve.  I have tried to locate the PAP for a few folks who released it so inconsistently that I never did find a spot to put a piece of tape and have it stay stationary.  --  JohnP
