Question as to distance of pin from pap
« on: June 02, 2005, 06:17:42 AM »
I'm a senior bowler with slower speed and only average revs.  From what I've read, the best layout for someone like me would be having the pin 4-5 inches from my pap.  Maybe placing the pin level with or above the ring finger.  Well I had two balls drilled like that ( Bully and Hyde) and had a problem getting either ball to move very much.  So, had the Hyde plugged and redrilled with the pin 3 3/8" from the pap and below and to the right of the ring finger.  Well  its a different ball completely.  Now its has a strong arc and I don't have any problem with rollout.  So I had the Bully plugged and redrilled the same way and its now about 3-5 boards stronger than the Hyde with a similar reaction.

Also, I have an old Rhino Pro LE that has the pin only 2" from the pap and to the right and below the ring finger.  It's probably one of the biggest hooking balls I've ever had.

Is this unusual for a slower speed bowler?  If you were drilling a ball for dry, (say a pearl) would you consider using the same layout?

Any input would be appreciated.

I would probably guess that you might have a hair less than avg revs,
that or the lanes that you bowl on might have a considerable amount
of oil.

3-3/8th  from the pap give you the max out of the ball, and is usually reccomended for faster speeds or lower rev bowlers.  The ball will want to flare so it make up for the revs.

I myself like this layout and variations of it.

For a dry lane ball a pearl with this layout would work, but may be to strong depending on how dry the lanes are.

Thanks for the input.  I think I'll try an old pearl ball that I have in the closet before I invest in a new one.

Thanks again.

I agree with what was stated. Either your revs are less than average or there is a good bit of oil. I am actually planning on trying some pin above the fingers drillings to get some length, I have a little above average hand with slow speed and need the extra length. Just try different things until you find something you like/that works. Best advice I can give you.
