So tell me about CLT...
« on: December 25, 2005, 09:11:42 AM »
From what I understand about CLT (center line transfer), it's basically a standard t-grip in reality, but it's set up so that you can lay your hand flat on the ball.  Pitches are set up accordingly, with what I assume is mostly left-lateral and reverse in the thumb and probably left lateral in the middle finger.  But now...so what is the point of CLT?  Is it just another grip to use, or are there actually pros and cons to it?  I've nearly given up on my grip, as I cannot find a comfortable fit with the t-grip.  If I put in the popular foward, the base of my thumb can't clear the ball and it comes out as the same time as my fingers, making for an awkward release.  But if I add reverse, I have to death-grip the ball and can't release it normally as well.  So I'm pretty much at the point where I'm ready to try anything.  Assuming that's how CLT is set up, I actually like the feel of having my entire hand on the ball rather than almost none of it, as it currently is with the t-grip.

So does anyone have any insight to it?  Ever drilled it for someone, or tried it yourself?  Am I better off just skipping this experiment and fooling around even more with the standard grip?

I have it on all of my equipment. The details of it I could not tell ya. I can tell you that I just feel more comfortable in the ball and seem to get a cleaner release. Is it worth the experiment yeah only way to find out if it works for you. I for one will not go back to the standard T grip. Hope this helps a little.

Actually, with how a proper CLT is drilled, you're not changing the actual span, but the direction the pitches are going in compasision to your fingers.

Andy, that is correct. You keep your same span. You lay out your span as you do on any ball and just change the pitches. It does put a bit more hand on the ball and to me, it is very comfortable. I tried it once and loved the fit/feel, but for what ever reason, it seemed to lose the back-end pop on the ball. It may have been me and my mechanics that caused that to happen, I don't know. Anyhow, I went back to my regular grip/pitches and I didn't really fine tune the grip and give it a chance.

I did have a link that gives step by step guidance and was going to enclose it here. However, when I clicked on it tonight, it no longer works, so I am unable to enclose it.

Maybe others reading this might have a link to the CLT step by step instructions and disclose them??????

Actually, the one thing I always wondered about the CLT is how it affects your track? If my track is already 1/2" away from my thumb with at T-grip, what happens if I switch to a CLT?

Jermy, thanks for the link. That is the one that I had of which quit working for me. I canceled it out and replaced it with this one. The link you have posted here is the one I was refering to in my post (above) to Andy of which I could no longer get.

Alright guys, thanks for the help.  Just for the heck of it today, for two games I tried doing that.  I don't use finger grips (and don't have ovals) so I was able to just turn my hand like the CLT set-up.  Of course, all the pitches were the same so it felt slightly awkward.  But, I did like the feel of it.  It was a lot easier on my hand, ended up shooting a 212 and 279 (had a 290 going on but stuck a solid 9 pin on the 11th ball).  I'm going to have to try it a little more, as it's completely possible I just happened to match up.  But for a quick demo it felt easier on my hand as a whole, even without the corrected pitches.
