PBA World Championship Layouts

Hey guys,

I couldn't help noticing a lot of pin under middle finger layouts for todays telecast of the PBA World Championship (i.e. - long pin to PAP's).    Can any drillers out there give some insight why this layout was so popular on the 41 foot pattern today (especially with the strong balls the pros were throwing)?

Idk the respective paps of each bowler, but weak layouts on strong balls have been a staple for years.

 The strong cored balls go through the pins better, when volume allows those balls to be in play. In order to keep the those balls from farting at the arrows and get down lane, you need them to "lope". But not "lope" to the point where they won't respond, hence pin down, so they roll, long pin to pap, so they lope.

Smoothes the reaction to friction.  Dont assume they are long pin to paps with out knowing the bowlers specs.

Smallwoods was down there because he is a full roller and was probably closer to the thumb than fingers..  Rash seems to always have pins around the ring finger..  I though Dom's pin was up..  Don't remember looking at Fagans or PDWs.

Pin down creates a large VAL angle which gets the ball rolling forward instead of sideways. You must also realize that there are flare differences and other factors like weight hole/MB(if applicable) positioning that can fine tune the balls reaction shape and strength. This layout is ideal for sport patterns as they tend to have more oil up front and towards the outsides and less in the back part and the late mids.
Without knowing the bowlers PAP's, it's a shot in the dark as to what specifically the numbers of the balls.

Rash's ball was a pin down below his middle finger.  Considering he was throwing a Mastermind, pin was probably in the neighborhood of 5 inches from his axis.  Pete's balls were both pin below the ring finger; his Marvel-S and his Defiant Soul.  I believe Fagan was using his Marvel Pearl with the pin below his middle finger.  With his funky axis point, it puts the pin for him in the neighborhood of 4 1/2 from axis point.

I believe everyone was using a pin down layout.  That kept them playing more direct in the beginning and closer to the friction without being overly jumpy which is why you didn't hardly see any big splits when the ball went through the nose.
