Difference between these 2 drilling's?
« on: December 02, 2003, 10:30:18 AM »
If I take 2 of the same ball and keep them both polished/sanded to the same grit. And one is drilled with the PIN above the ring and the CG stacked below and the other one drilled with the PIN about 1/2" beside the ring and the CG stacked below...

...which one will get the most length, get the most backend movement, get the most overall hook throughout the whole lane, and which will handle Carrydown better?

Basically a 5 x 5 drilling vs. a 4 x 4 drilling.

Also, is it a fair question to ask which one will carry better? Because I've heard that the average 4 x 4 (or 3 3/8 x 3 3/8) drilling seems to not carry that great unless you've got a bunch of head oil???

A 5" pin uses higher RG and less of the differential.  It will get more length and will not handle carrydown well.

A 4" pin uses more differential so it will flare more.  It should hook more overall.

Backend is dependent on the lane conditions and the user.  For most conditions, the 4" pin will hook more on the backend, but remember that it starts sooner.  Too dry a condition and the 4" pin could roll out.

Carry is definately another user & lane condition situation.  As mentioned before, roll out hurts carry.  Too sharp an entry angle can also reduce carry.  Each drilling has its place.
